N series ford. Random hole in tractor.

Friend/neighbor bought an N series off of another friend (2N) and I took delivery for him. Going to give it a quick once over and make sure it starts, runs and goes its thing when it appears at his house. Otherwise his wife will kill him (and me- for being a bad influence)

Tractor runs great, everything seems functional. I am not used to the 3 speed trans.
Anyway, there is a hole just behind the starter. Looks to be torch cut.
Any idea why someone would put this hole in the tractor?

If it's torch cut, they likely lost patience trying to get the starter in.
Those starters can be extremely frustrating trying to get the old style
starter drive up, over and behind the flywheel if you're not used to
it. Especially if they monkeyed with it and had it locked in the retracted
position. The newer style isn't as bad. I wouldn't leave it open.

"maybe to get a stuck clutch unstuck"

I've seen that done too, but this wouldn't be an ideal place since the
starter drive is in the way and it's right on top to let debris and water in.
Usually they are hole saw cut lower on the side.

TORCH CUT?????

In cast iron?

LOL!

(Unless we are talking about a plasma torch/cutter!)

Or the Flow Through starter drive fell apart in use and the gear got jammed into the casting ! "I'll find my own way out, I am not wanted" Jim
