20 years ago today my wife & I left Iowa on a Harley Davidson headed for Alaska. We pulled a little Kwik Kamp trailer that folded out into a sleeping area with a little storage underneath the bed. In 2 1/2 months & a little over 17,000 miles we stayed in a motel twice. We left with new tires on everything & replaced the rear tire twice & when we returned back to Iowa we needed all four tires replaced. We guessed we rode on 2,000 miles of gravel. We rode to Prudhoe Bay in Alaska & also Inuvik in NWT. If anyone of you were to call my wife & ask her what was the most memorable time of her life she would get a big smile on her face & say our Harley trip to Alaska.

My wife & I hope to make a similar trip someday. Start out from Wisconsin, visit her sister in Seattle, and head for Alaska.

If you ever want to see the beauty of our country then taking a bike trip is the best way. congratulations on your trip. what a wonderful time of your lives for both you and your boss.

I would need an iron butt to make that trip. I had to give up my Goldwing 15 years ago, bad back.

I enjoy driving over flying. Get to see more of the country vs flying at 35,000 ft.

My idea of camping is at Holiday Inn express.

My Dad thought of retiring to Alaska, summer of 1974 five of us took two pick ups and drove from NY to Alaska and back camping all the way . Alcan was 1200 miles of gravel then. Great trip. Would love to do it again. Dad's health deteriorated and that was his last trip, he didn't have a retirement.

My wife and I made the trip in 2011 and again last summer from Mi to Ak.on a Goldwing. Not as brave as you as we motel it as I refuse to pull a trailer with my motorcycle. Each trip was over 10,000 miles. Both trips were 4 weeks. Never made Prudhoe Bay but did make it up to the Arctic Circle. We did a little less than 1,000 miles of dirt on both trips. I did have to get a new tire on the rear on the first trip and I did start out with new tires on both trips. Over the years we've hit ever corner of the US more than once and have been all through Canada on a motorcycle. We just got back two weeks ago from 4800 mile two week trip down South. Done allot of things on two wheels but the two Alaska trips are probably the top two things. Not too many 70 year old woman would ride the back of a motorcycle that far as my wife did and I;m not far behind her in age.

I'm hoping i'm around 20 years from now to look back on it as you can.

Where in Iowa gmccool is home? My wife and I winter in Arizona USA, and our winter neighbours/friends are from Iowa.

Clear Lake, Masson City, Garner, etc.,

The Alcan / Alaska Highway (mile 0 > mile 300) was my first 15 years (1972>1987) stretch of Natural Gas pipeline Indenture ship....LOL

You indeed had a true adventure, with a gravel Highway....

Here's a pic or two of July 2009....Lois and I,.... a 21 day adventure of Alaska.
