OT- possible tractor hauler

Found an 06 f150, ccsb, 260 thousand miles, 5.4L needs timing chains done. It still runs, so they haven't jumped time and messed things up. I'm looking for a work beater that only needs to go 5 miles most days, and they only want $1,000 for it. Think it would be worth having them done? Only rust is a couple patches on driver side doors and rear wheelwell.

"5.4L needs timing chains done."

What are you basing that statement upon?

They have "cam phaser solenoid" issues, cam phaser issues, and the camshafts run in unbushed journals in the cylinder head, when they wear a bit (a P.O. not changing oil frequently enough makes it happen faster) oil pressure controlled by the 'puter leaks away instead of passing through the hollow camshaft to make the cam phasers do their thing.

"Having the timing chains done" by a shop (you didn't say you were going to do this yourself) would more than double your cash outlay for this vehicle plus not address the other issues I mentioned.

The fix is "remanned" or new cylinder heads, but by the time you buy them and pay shop labor to install them, you are at the price of a "new" engine.

I don't think buying/taking over the misery on this vehicle will provide you with a "tractor hauler" at a bargain price. Just MHO!

I was going to look at it Sunday. If the
cost isn't too bad when I call a shop
tomorrow.

I did a bit of looking and some of the
modular engines, the chain guides break up,
which leads to hydraulic tensioner failure.

I just want out of the old Cummins before
winter. It's tired, I'm bored with it, and
I'll never get it fixed up.

Look that engine up on Youtube. As I recall, to get those engines fixed properly and installed it's around a 6K bill...

It will need cam phasers, chains, guides and tensioners, plus gaskets,,, $1500 for parts from Ford,, China parts about half that,, and a nasty job to change out.. Any one using these engines need to know that 10-20 engine oil is a must ,,any thing heaveyer will blow the seals in the phasers and tensioners.....don't ask me how I know that....

The "cheap" fix is about $1700. The cheap "kit" locks the cam phasers so the valve timing is no longer adjustable and gives you a programmer that allows the engine to run - with a loss of power and fuel economy. The chains and tensioners still need to be replaced and the "cheap" fix has to be done before the engine jumps time. If the engine jumps time you are looking at a rebuild of the entire top half (heads, cams, timing chains, etc... and possible a new oil pump. I would never buy a junk yard engine 5.4 3 valve unless they showed it running in the vehicle before purchase - even then it would only be to drop it in and dump the vehicle.

The "locked" cam phaser is not reliant on the oil pressure but you still need a fair amount of oil pressure for the tensioners to keep the slack out of those long timing chains.

It needs a column, has wiring bugs, non-intercooled with an automatic. And rust came through behind the left wheel and above the left rear wheel this spring. Only rust on it though, thanks to the leaking rear main. I've got a $1500 standing offer on it. Dad and I went halves on it at 1800 (cost me 24 by the time I got dad out of it) but after driving it for 9 years I'd say that's not too bad of a resale being 2wd.

If you look on auctiontime there are a lot of good old work trucks selling cheap every week, especially in Nebraska and Iowa, you can go look at them and drive them ahead of time. If you ever buy anything on auctiontime never bid until the last 3 minutes.

Yes, those old Cummins powered trucks seems like will run forever. I've repowered 4 vehicles with 4BT cummins and have had good service from them, '88 Ranger, '92 Explorer, '01 Dakota, and '02 Dakota. The Explorer and '02 Dakota were 4x4.
