Lost compression on ford 600 cylinders 2&3

Rebuilt engine last year with full rebuild kit, minus new valves which looked good. Replaced sleeves, rings, pistons, bearings, reseated valves. About 60-70 hrs run time on the rebuild.

Was mowing and engine started running rough with lost power. Pulled plug wires and found that 2&3 cylinders had spark but pulling wires did not change engine sound.

Checked spark at garage and it is strong to both cylinders. Changed out plugs, no help. Did a finger compression test and almost no compression on either 2 or 3. 1&4 strong compression.

Plugs not badly fouled, not using oil, no smoke in exhaust, no water seen on dip stick.

Haven t pulled the hood and gas tank to remove valve cover.
Any suggestions?

Blown head gasket between the 2 cylinders> did you retorque the head after you had gotten it warm?? If you did not good chance that is the problem. Or you have a valve problem and have a couple out of adjustment

How did you reseat the valves? If you used a grinder, and the heads are still original with no hard inserts? I'd suspect the valves
recessed in the head and your lost valve-lash clearance at the rocker-arms. Easy to check and for sure the first thing I'd check.

I suspect head gasket between the cylinders.

It would be unusual to suddenly have valve problems on 2 cylinders at the same time.

You could lift up the rocker shaft to close all the valves, blow in the #2 plug hole, see if air comes out #3.

I just replaced the head gasket on the 172 ci version of your engine with the gasket blown between 2-3, if
this helps you out mine would run and do ok but not the power it should was loosing no coolant, so when I
changed it things changed and it's a little powerhouse like it should be.

Sorry to get so many replies out to you guys. New to the forum.

Didn t retorque the head after the rebuild. Blown head gasket sounds like a good option since both cylinders went out at the same time. Seemed strange to lose both cylinders at the same time due to valves or bad rings. Ran beautifully before this failure with more power than I ve had for the past 15 yrs. I ve been bummed.

When I ve had an opportunity to pull the valve cover and check things out, I ll report back to the forum. All of your input has been most helpful. Thanks for the quick advice. Much appreciated.

replacing the head gasket wont solve your problem for ever even if you retorque the head
with a new gasket .

email me and I can explain it to you with photos.

. Pulled the valve cover. Everything looks good on top end as best I can tell.

With #3 valves closed, I applied compressed air through plug hole and it came out #2 hole. From the forum input I understand that indicates it is a blown head gasket. When I get the head off I ll also check for warp. Anything else I should look for? Again thanks for all your input and trouble shooting info. You folks made the task simple.
