Farmall B Starter problem

I bought a new starter, but the Bendix doesn't engage the ring drive. I thought maybe it was going in the wrong direction, but laid it and the old starter side by side and tested with a battery charger and both run the same way. It spins OK, but starter drive doesn't engage. I am using a 12 volt battery on a 6 volt starter, but I have a 12 v for years.

If you have a warranty, use it if not, and it has no outward motion of the drive pinion, try moving
the pinion with a screw driver, if stuck, take it apart and find out why. They spin outward on the
shaft on a spiral spline. If no joy replace the drive making sure to use a new style small spring
drive Sold here for ~ 20 bucks. Jim

They are called "inertial starter drives", meaning that as the starter quickly accelerates, the mass of the gear "holds it back", causing it to screw outward and engage the ring gear as it accelerates.

If the "inertial drive" in a 6 Volt starter is not s screwing outward when you power the starter with 12 Volts something is seriously wrong, either the motor isn't quickly accelerating or the drive is stuck, or otherwise defective.

Use jumper cables to spin it from a car/truck. If you do, hold it down with your foot! It should snap out and about roll into the next county.
if it does, the starter is good, and the supplied voltage is way low. Bad battery, bad wires (maybe too small) or bad connections/ground. Jim
