Decal restoration

I worked for three hours today with emery cloth, two grits of fine sandpaper, rubbing compound and the buffer. I could lay the side panels down and look across them in the light and see the decals under an old thin layer of paint. There wasn't much to work with on the right side, but what was there came out alright. The left side cleaned up pretty respectable. They look good enough that I'm not going to replace them.

Apparently it was repainted a long time ago. I was disappointed when I saw that, but it was so long ago that the paint is worn off the fender where he drove with his hand on it. Whoever did it was good. There are no paint runs or anything. The cast is mostly original, but they had painted over the yellow frame stripe under the grill. I got that cleaned off down to the original yellow paint too. Everything up under the hood is original,it still had the decal for the fuses on the inside of the battery box and those don't even come with a new decal set. The yellow lettering on the axles is original. I'm not even positive that the fenders were actually ever repainted. The grill and center strip are the correct yellow and show no sign of being repainted.

We have a show tomorrow,so that's as good as it's gonna look for that. The side curtains still need some polishing, but it's real tough to get after those with the electric buffer. I'll keep plugging away at it as show season goes on and try to keep getting it better and better. I have to get a new set of rubber torsion springs for the seat suspension yet.

It must have been painted before Majic brand paint came out, LOL

I've got three of those up there. The early Oliver Hart Parr, the Shield and the Keystone.

Looks great! Lots of work there. Reminded me of a decal on my loader. I bought this jubilee with an unknown loader on it. I saw an outline under the (ugly) yellow paint, just knew it was the brand of the loader. I worked with solvents and sand paper, only to find a " My kid is on the honor role" sticker.Still don't know the brand of loader. joe

I don't know the availability of replacement decals. If they are difficult to get you might photograph the decals you have in case in the future you wish to make stencils to paint the lettering.

The old girl cleans up pretty nice! I did the same with my Massey 44 Special....it had one repaint about 40 years ago, right over the decals, so I lightly sanded them off like you did. The original owner had it for 60 years and kept it in real nice shape. Heck, the first show I brought it to, it won the most original tractor prize! I am sure yours will too! Good luck at the show.
