I'm probably over thinking this but is there a reason that a double acting cylinder can't be used in a single acting application by using the return port as a vent?

Yes you can do that,, and they make a vent fitting with a filter in it, or you can make one up,,if you are in dusty conditions (which would be hard to find in Ohio right now),, the dust/water will suck into the fitting..

Expanding on what Tim S said you can also run a hose from the un-used port up to the top of your reservoir above the fluid level. This allows that cylinder to "breath" clean air without risk of getting water or dirt into it.
