I got a skunk that comes up to the house at nite, digs a hole, and is gone bye morning, seen him a couple of times, at nite, but dont want to shoot him that close to my house! I poured gasoline in the holes think the smell would drive him away permanatley.it didn't work!

Skunks dig little one inch "divots" in my yard, looking for grubs. I just leave the divots alone as they do no real harm to the turf and they deteriorate in a couple weeks. Skunks are excellent "mousers" so that is a big benefit to have them around. They are also a very good looking animal and, if not for the smell, they really do no harm.

If you walk outside and calmly get their attention, they will slowly walk away.

I am not a notorious animal lover, but on balance I see no reason to kill them unless they show symptoms of rabies. They are a clean animal compared to raccoons.

I live-trapped them years ago, but now I do not see them as a threat. Live-trapping certainly is exciting but I had a good method and never got sprayed.

I had one come into my shop one evening and walk right up to me. When I started to move away he then saw me and got upset but I managed to run fast enough.

Are you sure you want to pour gas in holes around your house? There are animal repellant sprays you might use.

(quoted from post at 19:45:56 05/12/19) Yeah, this one walks towards me,when he see me, i definitely don't want to take those rabie shots!!

The skunk may have become accustomed to seeing people feed their pets, without realizing the skunk is not invited. So after a while, they can start to come to people, even ones they're not familiar with, hoping for some food.

If a skunk has rabies, it will act very unusual. From my experience, just because one comes towards you or is seen in the daytime doesn't necessarily mean they're rabid. Sometimes they get disturbed from their daytime resting spot and are forced out into the daylight. Tractors, mowers, dogs, etc., can all disturb their slumber.

I just caught one in a live trap yesterday! It is a wire cage trap and I was concerned it might spray, but it didn't. I had a 10 foot rope on the cage and used a 10 foot pike pole to drag it over to a water trough, I picked it up with the end of the pole and immersed it in the water. After an hour I took it out and fed it to the eagles, they aren't fussy what they eat. It never gave off any smell at all. The water trough is not for livestock, it's just the overflow from the artesian well.

I also want to note that skunks are good for controlling the rodent population. More reliable than snakes. Snakes were maybe active 5 months last year and so far this year other than two days it has been too cold for snakes this year but I have seen skunks out for a while now. If the skunk is hurting nothing other than your pride leave it alone.

Really cruel to drown an animal like that.

I shoot every skunk that comes around. 2 years ago I killed 7.
Our son lost a basset hound pup to a skunk attack. He shot the skunk and it tested positive for rabies.
Pup was about to have its rabies shot in about 2 days.
Rabies is nothing to play with. With grand kids around, we take no chances.
As far as I am concerned, the only good skunk is one that is under ground.
