First field work in the kingdom

Thought I would be able to plow the one field I have that is lighter ground, but it's still too wet. I plowed a few rounds anyway so I could get the plow set right so if it ever does dry up I'm ready. The 1030 handled the plow fine in 4th gear, probly about 5.5 mph.

Plowing

Hu Jon, this is no criticism, but a question. I haven't seen a plow used around here (Memphis) in 20 years. It seems a lot of guys still use them. Why there and not here?

You have some dry and light soil there for Minnesota, looks nice.

Top 2 inches dried off some down here, field cultivator and disk bring up mud, never mind a plow.

I pull 4-20 plow with a 145hp tractor, a 6 bottom pretty much takes front wheel drive and duals.

We try not to do heavy tillage in spring any more our clay doesn?t dry out and fit up right in the short springs we have. Looks like it is working well up there.

Several reasons, you folks have highly erodeable soil so you have to be careful with tillage. You are also much dryer and warmer than we are. For us plowing helps the soil warm up in the spring and also dry out. In my heavy soil on my farm spring plowing is not good if you can avoid it, but it was too wet last fall and I didn't get done, so now I'll have to do it this spring. Hope it dries enough to avoid lumps, but sometimes you just have to deal with it as best you can.

Soil conditions. We have a sandy loam here. The guys that tried no till said it was good the first 2 years. Then soil compaction really started to cut into yields. So they took to chisel plowing. Last few years some have gone back to mow board. Not every year on every field. But they found they go 3-4 maybe even 5 years with a chisel plow, then mow board and the yields stay pretty constant on irrigated land.

I?ve pulled 5 in the past but like this picture I could only go 8 inches deep I like to go 10 to 12 inches deep that and it?s hard to move a semi mount plow around . With the 3x16 I can drive right on the trailer and go anywhere I want

Nice job. I am really surprised you can pull that plow. It must be a lot easier soil to plow than we have around here. Paul

Larry, you need to realize that Jon and I are buddy's. If you keep trying to drive a wedge between us, Jon will break your RH typing finger and I will break your LH one. HeHe!!! Just kidding.

It's not really fair to compare a 4020 to a 1030, a 4020 has it's hands full trying to keep up with a 930.

Plowed with Dad's 1030 and 6x16 semi-mounted plow back in the late 70s. Haven't seen a plow used in this country since those days. Spring plowing was always done with a pony drill at the same time.
Dad's tractor had 500lb weights inside the wheels and fluid in the 20.8x38s. Didn't have any extra weights in front of the wrap around weights. I was a little guy then and couldn't reach the pedals without sitting on the edge of the seat and try to anchor myself onto the steering wheel for leverage. When I'd release the clutch, it would throw me back some and with that semi-mounted plow hooked up, the front of the tractor would come off the ground a foot or two if you let it get the best of you. Not sure who was pushing who around in that cab. I also remember how I hated plowing in the fields that had a fence line to turn in front of. Always afraid I'd hook the fence with that 3point mounted plow when I turned out on the ends.

Back about 65 years ago Dad and I were plowing alfalfa sod. Dad had the DC and 3/16s Oliver plow and I was on the SC with the IH 2/16s. Dew wasn't off when we started. Came to the end behind Dad and tripped the plow to lift...wouldn't lift, just skidded the tire as I kept the trip rope pulled. Heard Dad yelling for me to stop as the front of the SC went thru the neighbors fiddle string tight fence. Course the neighbor was working across the fence with his 60 JD. Spent some time getting everything out of the fence. Dad got a tire chain for the IH plow and it never failed again. Remember the neighbor telling Dad I was too little to be running a tractor.

He is in the lighter soil part of MN. A lot heavier in south west and south central MN than "up north".

Lol, this small bit is lighter
than the rest, but most of
what I have is clay and very
hard plowing. Going to be a
different story when I sink
this plow in that stuff.

Nice Jon! I ,can't even cut my lawn it's so wet here! Darn clay. Is that the same tractor that was blowing a flame out of the stack last fall???

No plowing here but plenty of seeding going on. Driest conditions in years. And we broke an overnight low temp last night. Coldest night since 1907. I've just done a couple hundred acres of anhydrous and at no time was there ever mud on the tires. Quite a change from a few years ago.
