We tried to start the 6 volt tractor with the car and jumper cables,
Must have fried something cause it won?t do anything now!
No click or anything
Have charged the battery now but nothing
Any help on how to trouble shoot this would be helpful
Thanks
Phil
It?s an old 1940s tractor

Possibly the starter drive has jammed into the flywheel. Loosen the starter mounting bolts enough so you can pull the starter out a little. Listen for a "click". If you hear the click, then put the starter back in and tighten the bolts. If that was the problem, the starter should now turn and start the engine.

Where did you put the jumper cables on? If starter and ground, no problem the starter doesn't care how much voltage it gets. If you put them on the battery you are lucky that the battery didn't blow up, and it could have burned a solenoid coil if it has one.

(quoted from post at 04:06:11 05/05/19) Mag or distributor? If distributor, you fed 12v to a 6v system and probably fried something.

Rarely is a 6 volt distributor or starting system immediately affected by 12 volts. Now on the other hand 6 volt charging systems which are usually generators may not fair as well, particularly the voltage regulators. I would second the likely hood of the starter drive gear getting jammed in the flywheel ring gear. I also agree that jumping a 6 with a 12 it is best to go directly to the starter.

Check ALL the connections on your large battery cables.

Most likely the reason you had to jump it in the first place is due to a bad connection on one of these cables. If the tractor will literally do nothing, not even click the starter, you have NO power from the battery.

Take everything apart, inspect, clean until shiny, and then reinstall TIGHT. Replace cables and/or cable ends that are suspect.

Barnyard is right about the battery cables. There have been many tractors with positively clean battery cable terminals that would not crank until they were cleaned.
