Went and drove neighbors 4010 John Deere and noticed
when going in 8 th gear it?s had a horrible gear train noise
howl from transmission like some of those old international
tractor would do when going into high gear. Should that be
normal or not I don?t think it is but has anybody else had this
issue with these tractors?

Chatter or a whine? My 4010 makes a moderate whine in 8th and has done so for as long as I can remember going back 50 years.

Was the noise when coasting along or when under load(like going uphill)? My 4010 is very noisy when coasting along with no load. It needs the differential reshimmed but dealer said wait untill it needs brakes then do it. It has been like that since I bought it in 1989 and it did plenty of tillage and pto work. The noise is bad but not any worse since I bought it. I have ran others that were noisy. Tom

It?s just chatter when going in 8 th gear down the road . Kind of gets some what worse when hitting acceleration.

Dad has a 4020 and I do not think it is any noisier in road gear. No bad noises in any gear. Used to have a clunk when going from fwd to rev. but a new axle wedge fixed that. I have driven it several miles from his place to mine a couple of times. Ours is heavy with a loader and a rear blade and rears full of fluid. Helps it is a gas model and not worn out as bad as the diesels.
