Zero turn mower carb

So, I went to start up the Toro zero turn mower for 1st time this year. A few cranks and it fired up (I use Stabil and works great for me). After about 30 seconds, it started sputtering and shut dow. Assuming it was out of gas, I grabbed the full gas jug, but noticed gas dripping from the carburetor. Now, we inherited this from my in laws last year. Was running just fine. I assumed it was a cracked fuel line but Upon disassembly, I found the carburetor?s fuel bowl gasket was only half in place. It was pinched enough to look like it had been out of position for some time. No way my FIL disassembled this. Maybe a repair guy but how would it have run for a season? So, I straightened it out fairy well, reinstalled the kinked gasket with a little grease on it and no more leak. Runs like a top again. Can?t figure out how it got out of place.

Actually, if the float is set low enough only a tiny bit of gas might slop out. Just remember, virtually all carburetors are open to the atmosphere through a little hole in the top of the body somewhere. Carb was right on the sweet spot. Any other time gas would be pouring out. Have also seen the square type o ring all twisted and the bowl just screwed on. Never leaked. Go figger.

The needle valve wasn't leaking when you shut it down last fall. After sitting over the winter, evaporation in the carb gummed things up a bit so the float bowl overfilled. After getting some fresh gas to loosen things up, the needle valve closed off, otherwise the carb would still leak gas someplace else.

That is exactly what it looked like. Gasket was never installed properly but it did not leak until now. Oh well, it was a 1 hour but easy fix. I love those kind.
