I have an Oliver 1855 with a 5.9L Cummins in it. It hasn?t run in 15 years. I have turned it a little bit with the fan to check and see if it?s set up and it?s not. I have drained the fuel tank and filters and put in new fuel. I also pumped the lift pump and pumped the old fuel out of the system. Should I try to start it?

Loosen all six injector line nuts, then see if there's fuel at each one while cranking the engine. If so, it should be ready. On VE pumps, if the plunger and/or metering sleeve sticks there WILL be internal damage, I've seen cam plate pin and the correction lever sleeve ball break. Recently had a four cylinder VE the cross plate between the drive shaft and cam plate broken too. Engine barely ran, and pump made lots of clicking noises inside too.

I have a 3.9 cummins in my 93 ford f150 with a ve pump and it runs 25 to 29 mpg very good setup. i think that if you blead the injectors with the hand lever on the lift pump youll be ok. let us know how you come out. the 5.9 is one heck of a motor. Bob

In a Bosch VE the problems with setting are the veins in the low pressure side of the pump will hang up, the relief will sometimes stick. In extreme causes I have seen the metering sleeve stick to the plunger and destroy the gov. Assembly when it tried to allow the plunger to move up and down while rotating. 95% of the time when I get a stuck VE it just refuses to deliver fuel without any damage. I have seen damage, but not very often. If it doesn't supply fuel to the nozzles then you will need to have it torn down and a simple reseal should get you back up and going. This is a very common thing, I see at least a couple a month. Al
