OT - Elm Tree and Why I hate Porcupines

I posted a picture of my big elm a couple of weeks ago.
While cleaning up the yard, I found that a porcupine had been in it as well as another younger elm.
Elm seems to be their favorite for some reason.
This tree has to be nearly 75 ft. tall and the little bugger climbs
almost to the top.
The pile is probably about 75% of the branches he chewed off.
It doesn't look like he eats them.....maybe sucks the sap out?
Anyway, anyone not knowing the story would think the twigs
were cut off with pruning shears...that's how neat the cut is.

Of course, if you own a dog, you might have another reason to hate them.
When I was younger, I used to remove them from the dog's snout myself using pliers....the last one I took to the vet....can't remember how much that cost me but it wasn't cheap.

"They're fun to track in the snow." That reminds me of a story I read many years ago about mountain men in the Rockies.....it was taboo to kill them because they were the only animal easy to catch if you ran out of ammo. I guess they're not too bad eatin', especially if you're starving. LOL

In Minn , several years ago deer hunters were told to shoot them if they saw any as they were damaging so many trees. I did. My brother had loaded some 06 rounds with a cast bullet for finishing shot of deer if needed. Glad I didn't need it as it blew that porky into oblivion.

If you read about the young woman and her small child that were killed by a bear a while back. Her man came home to a bloody mess and the bear attacked him. He was carrying and shot and killed the bear. A necropsy showed bear had porcupine quills in mouth and down into gut.

Last fall when grouse hunting my wife found where one had eaten enough bark off of one of our Tamarack trees to kill it. She
blew it right off the tree with her shotgun.

Trouble is, they like to do their dirty work at night.

I have killed a couple of them with 22 LRHP, another with my son's 223 and most dramatically, another one with a 12 ga. slug.

If you do not get a head shot, they die hard!
