John Deere 1010 Back Firing

I just purchased a john deere 1010 it has been backfiring through the carb.

I adjusted the points and cleaned the carb I checked timing and seems to be in time.

Any advise would help.

Thanks
Spencer

Be sure you have the correct carb as well. Having the wrong carb, regardless of how many tweeks and
adjustments u make, could be getting too much fuel. Find a source for the correct carb.

Under what condition does it backfire?

Does it run at all?

A no start backfiring, or continuous bad running can be wet ignition, cracked cap, bad points, bad or lose condenser, loose connection or failing primary wire from the coil to the distributor.

Backfire on acceleration can be lean mixture. Try a partial choke, see if that improves it.

A rhythmic, steady popping back through the carb that gets worse under load is an exhaust valve failing to fully open, as in a flat cam, bent pushrod, bad rocker, or backed off adjuster. Check the valve train over carefully for broken springs, and lash out of adjustment.

1010's used a positive ground system. Not sure that would cause a backfire, but it won't hurt to make sure everything is set up right.
