john deere 2020 gas tank

Hi, I have a John Deere 2020 with a rust hole in the gas tank. I do not want to spend $500-600 on a new or replacement tank, any ideas on fixing the old one? Thanks

I've "temporary" fixed several with a sheet metal screw and an oring.

Put a small, tight fitting oring over a short sheet metal screw, hand tighten it only enough to stop the flow. Do not use a screw gun!!!

Hand sand the area down to bare metal with 80 grit Emory cloth, about a 2" circle.

Then epoxy over the screw with JB Weld, an area about 1 1/2 diameter.

Chances are it will rust through somewhere else eventually, but it could buy some time.

I have very large high wattage electric soldering irons that I use to repair tanks and
starter work also , any one of the older forge type soldering irons will work also just
need a heat source, make sure everything is clean a dry and you also have to tin your iron
and tank surface and it will solder nicely, a 50/50 solid solder will do the job.

I have repaired many an old rusted up 2 cyl. gas tank with acid core solder. You must have them clean of all fumes inside to prevent blowing them up. Like said before a solder iron would be safest. The worst ones I even sandblasted the outside to clean them up real good.

Thanks for the info, I have pulled the tank and it is really rusty. I am going to clean it up to see if its worth saving. If it is I will try soldering it. Thanks again
