Grain Cleaning

Another 40 year old photo. My dad beside the Carter disk cleaner. We were cleaning spring wheat in preparation for planting the crop soon. That elevator on the cleaner is one I salvaged off the old Case model A combine. Crude but it worked and we cleaned a lot of wheat that way. Once I changed to a newer variety of wheat it would not work anymore. Threw most of the wheat out with screenings and I could never figure out why. After that it was cleaning at the elevator and later hauling to the cleaning plant.
Thats the 930 Case hitched to the FArm King wagon.

Nice picture. I wish I had more photos of my dad , doing the every day things around the farm, but my folks always thought pictures should be for special occasion, with everyone dressed up or posed. Strange as this might sound, my mom and dad didn?t really like the farm. Both raised on the farm, but would have rather done something else. My dad the only son was expected to come back and take over the farm in 45 after WW2 was over. He did as his father wished, but both he and mom felt they could have had a better life somewhere else. And discourage all of us kids from farming as much as possible. I rebelled, and went out and rented a farm and started milking cows in 81. My 4 siblings went to university or college, I was a disappointment, lol. I work with my dad a lot, and really wish that I had pictures like you have shared with us of my folks, on the farm doing everyday jobs. Bruce

Same with my dad as he would have liked to stay in the army after WWII but Grandpa was older and in poor health so somebody needed to take over the farm. Dad and his younger brother farmed together for a while but then it was just dad for a while until I was old enough to take on some of the farming. I'm fortunate to have as many photos of him as I do. Just wish I'd had a better camera at the time. Obviously I did not take this photo as I am in it. The closest I got to farming with horses.

Rusty I really like your sharing these great pictures of your history. I have few pictures of the family from the past. I would love to be able to show my kids pictures of the people I talk about growing up around.

Also your brother looks a lot like your Father. I am remembering your wood cutting/splitting video.

Bruce. Great story. I'm laughing that your " rebellion" was milking cows. You 're a real rebel. A regular "James Dean" huh ? The " Milk Man". I always enjoy your posts Bruce. Hope you have a good day.

My neighbor has a seed cleaning business, with equipment that his dad put together..Cleaner is mounted on a pickup, and a threshing machine dump weigher is used to tally the bushels.
