Family Tractor......

The weather was finally good enough to do some painting Monday in Loren's and my GBS paint booth so we fought the wind and that's what we did. The Deere 4630 is a 1974 and was my Dad's big tractor until he got his 8630-He had 24.5 x 32 tires on it and when he died I changed it to 18.4 x 38's for it was my planting and cart tractor. My son bought it from the Wife and I five years ago and is changing it to 18.4 x 42's. He used the 38 inch castings and bought 42 inch step-up rims. I used to widen a lot of wheels for tractor pullers and made a machine to rotate the rims when I cut them apart and welded them. It is driven by a hydro system off of a grocery store door opener. I made a driveshaft and adaptor to turn the wheel real slow as I painted them--works slick-paint doesn't run when it is rotating and you get great coverage. The green is original and now the yellow makes it look tired but it is 45 years old! It has been a good tractor and I think it is one of Deere's better tractors---Tee

Denny, I like your rotatory. Cool idea. You can keep the CBS paint booth there a while, as I don't have any full sized paint projects in the near future.Loren

When I painted the rims on my 8430 I made a slight V shape out of roller convayer. I was getting 8 new tires so i painted the rims while the tires were off. Be sure to paint your axle black!

A 4640 was the first tractor I bought new back in 1980. I agree - one of Deere's better tractors. That tractor never saw a load it didn't want to pull, it would lean into a load, snort and claw, and something would move. I ran it at about 225 horse it's whole life. It broke a head bolt at about 8,000 hours during planting season and I traded it for an 8300 MFWD. The dealer was sure I would be impressed with the new one but he was wrong. I liked the front assist but the 4640 would outwork the 8300 any day. I know where the tractor is - a friend owns it - and I've thought about trying to buy it back, which would be very hard to splain to the wifey since I'm planning to mostly retire next year. Maybe I could sell my 8285 and call it downsizing???

That looks real nice. It is nice that you are cleaning and painting them up while you are upgrading.

That is quite the rotor you have there.

Your 4640 had the 466 and the 4630 had the 404--both good engines--both good tractors!--Thanks---Tee

I learned something new today. I always thought the 4630 had a 466 without the intercooler. I had a 4230 with the 404. I always thought it was pretty thirsty for the power it put out. The turbo helped the 404 a quite a bit. They got a lot out of that engine in the 4630.

Can you take a pic of the the whole tractor would like to see how looks. Would like to put 42s on my 4840 to speed it up for pulling the turbo till.

Got a 4840 and an 8300. The 8300 has a nice cab and the mfwd is great when needed but it's not near the tractor the 48 is.

4230-404-no turbo-round pump---4430-404 with turbo-inline pump---4630-404 with turbo-inline pump and intercooler. After I bought the 4630 I took it to the Deere dealer for some work and they put it on the dyno and it had 190 hp.-I had them turn it down to 160--stayed cool and had all the power I needed for what we pulled with it. I think it will stay in the family forever!

you know the tractor is turned up when the ee in deere is melted off the hood. See a lot of 4630s like that.

My wife used to run the combine and I hauled the grain away. Always enjoyed harvest that way. She got along great except for one time when the header control was acting up and she spent the afternoon trying to keep from digging dirt with the bean head. That day she was ready to take her pension and quit.
