I'd rather have a smaller plow and go faster. Lot easier on the machinery and more fun. Probably get the same amount of work done.

I guess you can try it . I?d rather put a smaller plow
In the ground a little deeper and run a bit faster than
have to big of a plow

It depends: soil type, hills, wet/dry, rocks. As was said below I suggest you stick with the three bottom on that tractor for all the same reasons. As my dad would say, why pull the guts out of the tractor.

If you really want to plow faster then get a bigger tractor for that four bottom.

Just my two cents.

Paul

I pulled a five bottom semi mounted plow on the road with an AC 160 once. While accelerating, and shifting up through the gears, I had to be a little careful. Didn't have much steering. Fortunately I was used to steering with brakes.

I've proven to myself, more than once, that I can cover more ground faster and burning less fuel by pulling a little smaller plow
as opposed to struggling a little with a size bigger plow.

Not sure why you are asking..as I suspect you already know the answer. Why would you would want to stress an old yet presumably functional drive train... especially if your farm has the heavier soil types.
Years ago I pulled a 3x16. 3PT Oliver plow with my AC 175 ..weighted down, front and back, with 18.4 x28 tires. Today that same tractor lives on as a dialy chore tractor... rather worn and loose.. but
functional enough to feed the cattle, clean the barns and fix the fences. I attribute its longevity to knowing when to relieve the tractor from its earlier heavy work. At 77 years of age I employ the same
philosophy regarding myself... I don't try to do the same stuff as i did when i was new.

John Deere showed 4 bottoms behind a 2020 in some sales brochures. They also showed six bottoms behind 4020's and that did not happen in very many places. I used a 5 bottom on my 4020 and found that I got about the same work done with a 4 bottom going a little faster. Both me and Dad always pulled three bottoms with our 2510 diesels and it worked good. Your 2020 has the same engine as a 2510. The extra gas you use, stress to both the tractor and the operater just does not make trying to pull 4 bottoms worth it. Tom

What size bottoms are you talking. A 3-16" plow will cover the same width as a 4-12" plow and the 4 would do it easier than the 3 because you would beworking 2" shallower. That tractor was sold as being able to pull a 4 bottom but they always use easy plowing soil to rate a tractor. Depending on model an HU with the 36" rear tires will pull more than a RU with 28" tires but most would be the RU model. That tractor was direct compition to the fords I hadin the 4100 model 38" rear wheels and I pulled 3-16" with one and 3-14" wuith the other. I also had 4-14" for the 5100 Ford but it strugled with it so a lot of time I jused the 3-14" on it.

I pulled as much as 5 16s with the 4040,but I found that 4 18s was a "right sized" plow for that tractor.
