Hi everyone I have a ford 800 and had a question about the PTO when I go to use it with my mower the PTO won't engage. And makes a grinding noise. But when the mower isn't a attachment. The PTO works fine I was just wondering what would cause this any help would be appreciated.thank you

Live pto or not?
From what little info you gave us my
guess is that it might have live pto and
the pto clutch is not fully disengaging.
It is not completely disengaging without
a mower hooked to it but is not as
noticeable.
I would try adjusting the clutch pedal
according to specs.

An 840 is a 4 speed without live pto.

And 850 is a 5 speed without live pto.

An 860 is a 5 speed with live pto.

Be a little different as to the possible problems which it is.

Stop guessing and look at the serial and model numbers. Just behind the starter is two bolt holes and above those holes is a flat spot with both the serial number which is the top number and then the serial number. Grinding like that can be cause by a bad/worn shaft or PTO shifter or a stick 2 stage clutch if it is a 860

So, the 860 has a double clutch.

You need the clutch pedal in the ?high? position. The little pin at the bottom of the pedal has 2 positions, make sure it has the pedal uncomfortably high.....

Then, push half way down and the tractor transmission disengages. So you can shift it.

Push the pedal all the way down, and the pto is also supposed to disengage. If it is out of adjustment it might not. Typically if it is wore out it also won?t quite shift right.

Good luck hope it?s just an adjustment......
