thinking of upgrade

After the brutal winter we just had here in Minnesota, I'm really thinking about upgrading to something with a little more hp. For the past 12 years my 1950 farmall H has been very reliable and worked for most my needs such as moving round bales, pulling king kutter, and mostly plowing snow. But this year we got a record amount of snow and all to often found the H really struggle to push thru drifts. Plus I'm responsible now for 2 more driveways (long story). Anyways I want to upgrade. I'm thinking of something with at least 50hp, live power, loader, 3-point. Something that maybe put a cab on. Wanna stay around $5000 budget. Looked at Case, international, oliver. Any recommendations on anything good bad would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

As soon as you said piushing. Can you run a small blower? Your red baby is fine for everything else but a blower throws it way out there. None of this pushing jazz. Just my thoughts .

A 25-30 HP 4WD tractor will work circles around that H and most are equipped with loaders.
As said, you can also put a 3pt snow blower on back so you have the snow problem licked in the Butt.

i have also thought of a 3 pt snowblower--but do you guys have trouble twisting and looking backwards? I do just grading with my blade--but i have had several spine surgerys also.

That's why I'd like to have a 3-point so maybe in the future getting a snowblower. I used a 730 case a couple times to plow and wow what a difference, So much faster.

An nice Oliver 1600 gas shouldn't set you back much more than half of that. Good, reliable tractor.

Lance, a fellow I know recently picked up a Fordson Major with a front mounted snowblower on a front 3pt rig. Runs of the rear PTO with a gear box to 'reverse the rotation' somehow bolted to the drawbar frame, and a drive shaft run under the tractor to a front PTO stub. He showed me a couple pictures, but I haven't seen it personally. Yet.

And I don't think your H would have the ponies to run a 5' or bigger blower through large drifts. I used a blower one year with an MF65, and even that at WOT and low 1st gear, it would still "work" when in the heavy stuff, but boy did it fly!

On 1960's tractors the price of a 75-90 HP tractor is not much more than the price of 50 HP tractor. A Case 930 Comfort King diesel, IH 706 gas, Oliver 1850 gas and JD 4020 gas are all around $3500. Add $1000 for a nice loader, cabs add no value to prices. If you have electricity in your machine shed you could use a block heater to warm up a diesel or gas engine in a just couple of hours (timer).

I wouldn't do a diesel unless your talents lean in that direction. I would be inclined to listen to the fella that recommended the Oliver gasser. He seems to know a little bit about them. Might be good advice.

For the 50 hp range I really like my jd 2510 gas tractor. It'll start in any weather. If you're going to just use it for chores and winter use I'd stay with a gas tractor. If you're planning on heavier use or lots of hours I'd look into a diesel. I don't always have electricity to plug a tractor in so a gas tractor to feed with is a must. If your H is struggling that bad though you might be money ahead to get a bigger tractor than 50 hp. Anything above that 50 hp range and I'd recommend diesel though. Around here $5,000 might buy a decent 4010 but won't touch a 4020.

Thanks everyone. I left out that I definitely want a gasser. funny thing, the old farmer that leases some land from me just stopped over to chat. I told him what I was thinking he told me same thing, go bigger! He said if you think you want 50hp go 90. I really appreciate all the input. From the little I've looked it seems I can definitely get a little more bang for my buck going Oliver.
