what do you think about mecum farm stuff auction

(quoted from post at 11:55:38 03/30/19) They sure do get a lot of pretty gentleman farmer equipment to disperse

The name Mecum is synonymous with high-end items targeted at high-end buyers. Bidders show up to spend a lot of money and often to be seen spending it. It's part of the spectacle. They do get burned at times: often an item will sell for an amount that far exceeds any reasonable appraisal, only to find itself offered a year or more later and fetching several hundred thousand dollars less. Hubris and a desire to win at all costs can be expensive. Probably not a real concern with the Mecum crowd.

I do enjoy the local sales around here, where buyers fight over a box full of motorcycle parts, a lawnmower blade, a busted chainsaw, maybe a dustpan and old mop and it all sells for $17.
Same cast of characters seems to show up week after week. Probably the same situation for the Mecum sales.

BTW didn't watch the video, but that's what I know about Mecum

I catch some of it now and then on TV. It was on for two hours today. All I have to say about it today is that I wasn't all that impressed with the lack of knowledge from the guys narrating it.

I've seen some very high dollar horses for sale after being "sold" in the ring. I get the feeling a good chunk of the Mecum auctions are the same way. I have nothing to back that gut feeling up, but I've seen some pretty plane jane stuff go for 2 or 3x what it's really worth. I get the Waterloo Boys bringing big cash, but some of the regular tractors just seem too over priced to be legit.

They had a JD 4450 for sale today. They called it a low houred tractor. 4400 hours or something like that. Good friend drove down just to bid on it. He said it was a good tractor BUT the tach. showed 1200 or 1600 hours. So it had been replaced. So who knows how many hours. Sold for $44,500 plus buyers fee. He was the nest to last bidder. I laughed my butt of at him.

Just two months ago a JD 4450 sold here locally. One owner with 100% known hours and dealer service records to prove the hours. He would not bid over $38K because he did not like the guy that owned it. LOL The guy was DEAD his widow was selling it.

So I think some like to brag about what they buy and where. I rarely say anything about what I buy because I might want to sell it down the road and what I gave is not the value at that time.

My description of Mecum auctions is "Den of thieves" One real common ploy they use is to get two people who have a tractor each agree to bid the other guys tractor in up to a figure. Yes the tractor was sold , as it looks there but it is just a ploy , no money ever changes hands. I am like JD seller lots of folks like to brag "I got it at MECUM" so what,s the big deal most likely means you paid more than it was worth..

Are any of those auctions broadcast live?
Seems they are at least delayed broadcast in order to edit out all of the low prices, no sales and boring stuff.

I sold a tractor and implement collection a year ago and was extremely pleased with Mecum's. They are as professional and organized as anybody that I have ever dealt with and run a outstanding operation. I like the fact that there are normally over a thousand registered bidders at any of the tractor sales and as accommodating as can be. Founded by Dana Mecum who started out working from his kitchen table the company has grown to one of the nations largest and most respected auction companies.

That has been my exact thoughts for quite some time watching the "Best of Gone Farming/ Mechum Spring Premier Auction.
Good old Boy's making each other look good.

JM ..... is that just your own interpretation of what goes on or is there something you have to back up your claim? Outfits like Mecum don't get where they are by being shysters. At least tell us how you KNOW for sure this is happening.

For those that may have noticed, I sometimes browse the Mecum site for tractor pics. Every now and then I see an auction where the items went surprisingly low, and always wish I had paid more attention "before" the auction. Unfortunately, I doubt I'll ever figure out how to tell which auctions will be the good ones to go to. ...Maybe the moneybags bidders are busy at some other event during those times??

it is like registered cattle sales I trade 2 5000 tom cats for your 10k bull dog ---happens every sale and then the sellers laugh it off

(quoted from post at 15:01:00 03/30/19) With box lots you never know exactly what the buyer is looking at I just sold an AC top link bracket on ebay for $200 that was in a $6 box lot.

I have similar stories, part of the appeal of these local sales. Never know what's going to show up and often people overlook things of real value.

The best Box and Contents story I know and I was at the sale for a guy that had a reputation for hiding cash. They sold a box with some old King Syrup cans in it.One was full of cash the person that bought it opened the can and saw the cash took off to his truck with the can.Heard all sorts of figures on how much money was in the can.

And if some unassuming outsider is there he goes to breakfast next morning telling all his buddies how high tom cats are selling... Big swap around. looking for suckers

sold several through out the years mainly green paint and some red, they always do a good job taking care of your tractor getting it ready and driving it through
