magneto removal

I bought a Toro mower, with a single cylinder Wisconsin engine on it, that must be from the forties or fifties. It has a WICO magneto and when the motor turns over there isn't any spark. To remove the cover, requires that you remove the magneto from the engine. Are there any do's or don't before I remove it? Will it have a drive dog that will make installation easy or will it have splines that can allow you to install it easily misaligned? Fore warned is fore armed.

Wisconsin engines with magnetos typically have a gear with a marked tooth on the mag and a plug that you remove to see the marked tooth.

If you can figure out what model you have, likely you can find a factory manual (free) at the site linked below that will give the exact details.

Take the pipe plug out & turn it slowly until you find the small X mark on a gear tooth. Then you can put it back the same as long as you don't turn the engine.

Thank you both for the replies. I will look for a plug near the mag before I remove it. Also I had tried to find this machine by Googling Toro. I had not thought to look up Wisconsin engines.
