Lawn Mower Belt

I took the drive belt off my riding mower and measured it last night, the width came out at 9/16". Assuming this is a 1/2" belt I went to order the new one but they are all listed as 5/8" belts.

Do belts wear that much over 8 years?

If the belt you ordered is for the make/model of your machine, it should be correct. If you measured 9/16, and it sure might wear that much (5/8 to 9/16). The 1/2" dimension you
site does not make sense. Jim

Yes, they can wear that much in 8 years, depending on how much they're used, many don't last that long. We have had good luck ordering belts online, but it's best to get a Kevlar one if it's available, anytime you have an idler on the backside with a lot of wrap ordinary belts don't last very long.

If the factory belt is available, I would recommend getting it.

I have had mixed results trying to match mower belts, usually in the failure category.

If it lasted 8 years, they did something right.

Also check all your idler pulley bearings, tensioner pulley and bracket for wear and alignment, spindle bearings and pulleys. Everything has to be right or the new belt will quickly fail.

Don't know what mower you have ? but do know many of the JD and Cub Cadet,Wheel Horse can have some odd ball special made belts on them best ordered from the OEM.

Yes, belts will wear some but unless they get very hot as from mis-alignment, they don't wear a lot. You can be sure though that they won't grow as in a 1/2 inch growing to 5/8.
