I have a 1100 Massey that has been the work horse for my small farm/ranch for the past 20 years. however for the last year it has developed a problem when working the tractor it will wind up for just a few seconds than die like it is getting air in the fuel system. after replacing fuel lines lift pump and filters it now will just wind up then come back to normal operations. the strange thing is you may work the tractor 5 minutes or 2days before it try's to run away. my first reaction is to pull the throttle back but this does not change the RPM'S till it decides to ideal back or I kill the motor. has anyone come across this before?

Time to pull the injection pump for rebuild and governor repair. I would recommend not running it until pump is repaired as it can very easily overspeed and do serious damage to the whole engine.

It might be in the injection pump, but there's more to check first as the CAV DPA injection pump does not have the weight retainer ring that fails like Roosa/Stanadyne pumps have. The supply pump must have good working check valves inside, and must have 4-5 PSI through the filters to injection pump. There's also a constant bleed orifice fitting on top of one of the filters, may be a straight fitting or banjo bolt, with a small bleed hole. Make sure it's open, it's job is to bleed any trapped air out of the filter base BEFORE air can get to injection pump, causing engine shut down. Also, if NAPA/WIX filters are used MAKE SURE the filter top outer groove next to the sealing lip is OPEN, that's the filter inlet. If blocked with an extra O ring, fuel flow is restricted, or stopped entirely. I've made lots of service calls to correct that common mistake. E-mail is open on Classic view if you still have trouble.
