OT FOR ELECTRICAL MOTOR GURUS

I have Sears table saw that centrifugal switch on motor is bad and is no longer available. My remedy was to install separate toggle switch to disconnect start capacitor once motor is turning. It seems to work really well, I just have to remember to flip switch, but is there a disadvantage to this method? That is, other than manually flipping the switch. After all, from what I understand, this is the only purpose of the centrifugal switch.
Thanks in advance!

If you can't repair the switch then that works. Somebody will tell you about potential liability when someone else uses the saw. Doesn't bother me. A spring loaded push button like a starter switch might be handier. Flip it on, push the kicker, and let it go.

Where are you located? Transmission went out of my old sears saw. Its just sitting out in the shed. In gonna keep the table but you could have anything else off it.

Check with an electric motor shop.

There's all sorts of solid-state motor starting switches available as generic replacements for mechanical ones that are NLA.

Only issue MAY be if the motor is NOT capacitor start.

Daddy's old boring bar had a centrifugal switch (called it a "mouse trap!!) that went bad when we were using it one time. We weren't able to fix it, but Daddy went and got a long flat shoelace. We wrapped it around the motor shaft where it coupled to the gearbox and "pull started" it!! Worked then and several years later, my BIL and I rebuilt/bored an engine. He couldn't believe it when I pull started the motor!!

I have one rigged up like that, but I have a momentary contact push button switch. Kind of like starting an old tractor, turn on the switch and push the start button. I have a bench grinder that has an external load sensitive start switch, it works fine too.

I can't imagine a local motor shop not being able to sub in a switch from something else. I used to get a lot of motors repaired by a local shop, and they helped me out with a few odd-ball situations. There was one very popular motor that used to wear switches out so we carried a switch for that one on each truck.

Below is a link to the sort electronic switches I posted about.

There are many brands on-line and a local motor shop would know what is a good brand.

We also had the same motor shop install probably hundreds of Sinpac brand electronic start winding switches. Other dealers of the same equipment used to buy replacement motors by the pallet and plan on a five year life out of them. We got the Sinpacs put in and planned on 25 years from the motor. We always had the shop do them because it was a bit of a job to correctly ID the proper connections as I recall.
