I need to see your ID

I closed my Mom' account at her bank. Mom has been gone for over 15 years. I needed to have the Safety deposit box drilled out. No key. That cost 150.00. Just a few old deeds, and a few family papers inside. I paid with the small amount Mom had left in her account, with cash for the box drilling. The teller wanted to see my ID for paying in cash. I said it's not a check. We don't need ID for a check, the teller said, and some banks don't take cash anymore. I guess cash will be a thing of the past in not too many years. Probably not in my life time. Stan

Safe deposit boxes are an out dated PIA. With so many relatively inexpensive fireproof safes, keeping documents, jewelry, cash, etc. at home is much easier for the owner and heirs (if you can trust them). From reading these forums I know many of you are gun owners and I hope you have a safe for your good guns. One or two trusted family members with the combination and problem solved.

2 years after my Dad died, I started getting billed for deposit box he had at the bank.
We had no clue my parents had one. The estate had already been settled for a year.
Went to the bank with a key I found and told one of the officials I wanted to open the box and see what was in it and then give the box up.
She did not know what to do since the estate was settled.
Finally she said we would have to have the estate proceedings started again by a lawyer before we could open it.
I said that was crazy. She spent a long time on the phone with people way up in her bank and nobody knew what to do.
Finally they decided to open it with me and her standing there to see what was in it.
I joked that I hoped it was filled with gold bars.
After all that hoopla, it was empty and we had a good laugh over the whole thing.

I'm surprised you got that far without an ID check unless you are a regular walk in customer.

That's always the first thing I get asked if there is a new teller.

"Do you have an account here and I need to see ID"

If either is lacking, the cooperation level drops to "There's the door!"

If my service dog in training goes in with me no ID needed they all want to play with him LOL. IF he is not there I need my ID.

They pay you cash from your mom's account and then want ID to give it back to them.
Original thinking going on.

Very well said sir. The safety boxes went out around me years ago it seems. I would notgive them time of day.

37 your a good guy and don't take this wrong. BUT WHY ON EARTH WOULD IT TAKE 15 YEARS TO CLOSE THIS OUT? Around me it would be done in like a year or less.

I don't remember where it is but either In the Constitution or the bill of right or other such place it says that cash is the legal tender and has to be taken at any place and if not taken the bill is void and paid because they did not take cash

The stuff you carry around are NOT really money. They are Federal Reserve Note. They are not "coined" by the government (coin, on paper).

The land was in a trust set up by Mom. I kept her box just because it was not costing anything. I was using her bank for the estate transactions so as not be confused with my bank. I closed the account in the bank, since nothing was being used anymore. I had the key, but lost it, so no more free box. I knew what was in the box. Stan

If you guys have them, make sure the executator of your will can get into the box when the time comes. My younger brother did not. We had to get judges order to open it.

Yes but it is legal tender and as such has to be taken by any business or the bill if null and void if they do not take the legal tender. THAT is the law as written

And is TOTALLY ignored.
The are now stores that only accept plastic.
And the fed does nothing about it.

It appears your wrong.
Even the Federal Reserve website says there is no federal law about merchants required to accept money.

on't depend too much on those inexpensive firproof safes till you check the reviews, many of them do not doo the job they claim too. Plus the knobs are plastic resulting in them having to be drilled out after a fire.
