recommendations for tractor

I am wanting to buy a tractor that is 40-50hp that is from 1960's, not large(like my case930)with live hydraulics, 3pt hitch, easy to work on. I have preference for gas. Will be using it to mow ditches and misc chores where I do not need the case> Thank you

135 Massey Ferguson I know you said preferabley gas but those Perkins diesels will run forever if you keep them serviced

Any diesel as long as it wasn?t designed by or for
gms automotive division will run forever if taken
care of

John Deere 2020. 54 hp very nice to operate and great parts support both new, used and aftermarket. A little smaller would be a 1520 which is a three cylinder with 45 hp or a 1020 with 38. Tom

My pick is a Jd 2510. Mine is a great little tractor. It uses the same engine as the 2020 that tomstractors recommended. For mowing ditches the 2020 sits lower and might be a better choice but I have no personal experience with them. The 2510 starts in any weather and is what I use to feed cattle with. It is a thirsty tractor to run though.

How much do you want to spend?
There are other very good tractors out there but it's tough to beat an old Ford.
A 3000 (37 hp) or a 4000 (50 hp)
are both very good old machines.
Simple, reliable and good parts support.

If I was looking for a tractor to do what you want to do I would pick any of the following. Massey 135, Oliver 550, MM 335,Ford 3000. In short look for live PTO,3 PT lift, Wide front end, and maybe Power steering.

If your used to case then you won't find much better than the small frame cases like 4/5/630. They have many choices for transmissions including com on the 5/630. All available in diesel or gas and very reliable.

Many of the comments here favor some Ford model. If you are receptive to something newer the Ford compact diesels deserve consideration. Models 2120 and its newer cousin, the TC series, come to mind. I have owned a TC 45 and it is a great tractor with shuttle type transmission, live PTO, rear remotes, etc. Mainly for loader lift capacity I upgraded from my TC 45 but it has capabilities beyond its smaller physical size. With your preference for gas unfortunately it is only available with a diesel engine.

A little over 50 HP but I love my Oliver 1600 Utility gas for using around the farm.Handles great, starts easy any weather, easy to get on and off,a lot of power for its size.

Another option would be the Massey Ferguson 65 or 165. They produce 46 to 50 PTO horsepower depending on age and engine. They are a little heavier and a little more power than the 135.

Also have a gas International 464 industrial very handy to use, hydraulically engaged PTO,Hydrastatic steering, very strong 3pt lift, differential lock.Very advanced tractor for its age.

It's very hard to beat a 3 cylinder Ford for utility work. Well designed, quality built, and plentiful in many areas. Plentiful doesn't always mean available or cheap, but good examples can still be found.

I consider the 3910 to be one thing the models that are the ultimate refinement of the Ford utility. I love it!

That's my 0.02 ;-)

I did not recommend a 2510 because of what he said about mowing. But I am with you on how nice a 2510 is. We have three right now and one 2520. Tom

Look around and see what was popular in your area. Lot of these guys are recommending Ford's. The 2-8-9 n Ford's destroyed the market for modern Ford tractors in the area I grew up in. There were very few MF tractors here. Here D17 Allis Chalmers ruled the roost in that hp? They are a good choice. IHC in the larger units were popular.

Series 4 D17 Allis hands down. But pto just continues to run with hi-lo hand clutch. Still my pick. Massey hyd sucks, for anything but 3 point. Not much wrong with 4000 Ford or 2020 JD.

Here?s my funny for the day.

When I saw this post I automatically thought, oh just call it a Ford 5000 and move on.😁🚜. Ha, ha. That?s how so many of these posts go. Someday I hope to drive one just so I understand all the love for that tractor.

I liked the smaller Case comment if you are familiar with Case. I also note the Case guys on here are a very helpful bunch.

Consider local dealer and parts availability.

Happy Hunting.

Paul. Oh, I am partial to JD👍.

Do what so many of us do find the tractor you always thought you wanted to own whatever the moniker on the hood and enjoy it. I could give you my opinion but that would be totally biased since I own all the tractors I ever wanted and then some life is good.

I love my 1968 Case 530 gas with wide front and loader. Might be a little shy on your horsepower specs, but by far the handiest tractor I have ever owned and used.
