Repairing the spreader

I set out to fix the axle on the manure spreader today. First step is to unload it. I just jacked it up and let it unload. Oops, I left a hammer on the ground behind it.

Now, brace the axle and drive very slowly to the shop.

Cut off the junk axle ends...

Weld the axle stubs to a piece of 3 inch square tube... Anyone else forget to breathe while welding?

I've had all I can take today, maybe I can finish it up tomorrow. I will probably sleep good tonight.

I can do a Repair job welding but I can only weld for about 5 minutes at a time or I lose my concentration

Wow rotten ain't the word! Looks like your are doing a bang up job. Poor old thing just kinda sagged and squated down.

I was going to joke with you and tell you I think I found the root cause. :) Then I saw all the rotten metal, Wow! So how is it the axle is so rotten and all the above metal looks to be in such good shape.

Nice job by the way. I assume you are doing both sides.

Is that current weather? Here in La Crosse WI we got hammered again last night. Rain, Mix, and now several inches of snow. But we cannot complain. At least it was not tornados. We're just ready for some warmer weather.

Not sure 3" is going to hold up. The other is thin, but tall and it's the tall that makes it strong. I would double it up if you have enough. A lot of weight, and the bouncing that comes with hauling manure will be a lot for a 3" tube.

The new axle will be solid all the way through. Last Sunday it was snow and single digits, coldest if winter. Yesterday, I saw a dead snapping turtle in the road, if that says anything about the weather.
