Ford jubilee proofmeter

Has anyone had problems replacing tachometer and cable in a jubilee ? I know the end of cable is square, and must line up in the square hole in tach. It doesn't seem like it's going in far enough, can barely get the nut started. When I tighten the nut even finger tight the cable will not turn. I called the place where I bought them, they had the same problem as I, but said they were told by their techs the cable shouldn't turn...? I think they were talking about the cable housing, and was unable to get it across to them the cable itself has to turn ,. Suggestions ?? Help !!

Well, it has to be short enough so it doesn't push against the tach in operation.

Could something be amiss or out of place at the other end, or possibly a broken piece of the old cable stuck in the tach?

Otherwise, it's probably mis-matched parts from "The Land of almost Right".

I had that problem with one I get from this site. I cut the appropriate length off and it has worked just fine for over 2 years
now. Annoying but manageable.

Yes, I had that exact problem. Brand new proofmeter and cable.
I don't know why, but I turned the cable one square side at
a time and when I got to the right one, it slid right in and fit.
Prior to turning it, if I tightened the nut, neither would turn at all.
It has worked fine for three years now though.

Yep, I got mine from this site also. The cable housing likes 3/16" from seating on tach. Actually this is my 2nd cable now. I cut one so I would have just the cable to try to see what is going on. It appears that where the cable changes from 4 square sides back to round is the hang up..I cut 1/4" off and still will not go all the way in. Maybe get one from another source...

I've tried for over an hour going 1/4 turn and trying but it still likes about 3/16" going all the way in. Even had another new cable from same source and tried it...may send it all back and go elsewhere and try again....

Aftermarket parts.

Not uncommon.

You MAY be able to get things to work by leaving the cable collar loose on both ends.

The inner cable is too long. When the cable housing is tightened, the inner cable should float between the tach and the drive. Cutting some off may solve the problem or at least help some, but if it is not squared far enough back, it will still bind.

Years ago, I had a set of tools for making custom drive cables. A crimping die set for attaching the ends and a squaring die for squaring the inner cable.
