Not wanting to hijack the UP 844 thread, I've posted this new thread about the zenith of steam locomotive design.

N & W Class J 611 was built in 1950 (IIRC, don't nit pick). Accordingly, she was 10-12 years more modern than UP 844.

611 epitomizes the zenith of steam locomotive design. She produced about 1,000 more HP than did UP 844 and she burned coal.

Steam locomotives became no better.

N & W 611

Dean my wife's family lives in southern Ohio. Her Mother talked about the N&W 611 running the rails just two blocks from her family's house. When the 611 first started running N&W had to move the signal switches back further from the crossings. The train was fast enough it would hit the crossings before the signals could lower.

While the steam engines are beautiful and have a romance about them, they where not a friendly/nice way of moving fright and people. MY MIL talked about how they knew the trail schedule by heart. That way they could get their laundry off the lines before the trains came by and covered the clean cloths with soot. This was two blocks away.

Thanks Dean for sharing.
I've seen and read about the Penn.Central 4-8-4 Locomotives before.
Agree was the best is steam technology.

Hope your trip goes as planned.

Should be Great!
