Interesting tractor on craigslist

Very common here in SE PA. Local Amish and especially Mennonites, if they have a tractor at all, it must have "steel wheels" (church rule). Many townships have an ordinance prohibiting use of steel wheels due to the road damage that they cause. Here is a picture of a built up steel / rubber wheel that is very common.

Very interesting, thank you for the info! I learned something new today.

So why do the Amish prohibit rubber tires?

Just what you need to brush hog with if you have a lot of thorny Honey Locust trees.I had a set of Amish steel on an AC 5040 I used with a tiller for years, worked good never had a flat.

darned good question. makes no sense but shouldn't try to make sense of the aamish

one thought is they need to be connected to the earth and rubber tires (air inside) separate them as you are floating on air.. but its rare to have one turn down a ride in a car.

another thought is tires are to "fancy". some areas the bishop (and its up to your local bishop) won't let them ride bicycles but they can ride a scooter (the kind you kick your self along with one foot) on air tires???.

Some areas they can use regular rubber tired tractors but the tractors must by older (like 40-50 years old) and others can have NO tractors at all... some can have a tractor but can only use it as a power unit like on a feed grinder or silo filler, generator ect. as long as its not field work.

some around here use newer modern tractors (regular air filled tires) as their business truck and pull a trailer loaded with all their work stuff. many are set up with a road gear so they fly down the road but not fast enough to keep up with traffic. definitely a road hazard.

so as i said... makes no sense.

most have generators to power stuff... some use air compressors and all thier tools are air tools... others doe the same thing with hydraulic units... doesn't matter where the power comes from its all the same. you turn diesel into electric energy, stored air engrgy or stored hydraulic energy.. its all "fancy"

ok enough aamish ranting for today...

So why do the Amish prohibit rubber tires?

Amish folks have a lot of rules that seem very strange to us. And it varies from one area to another because they make a lot of the rules locally during their Sunday "meeting". There have been some writings and reporting about some of their customs, but they are very private people and tend not to talk about it much.

They won't own a car, but will ride in one. They don't own a phone, but will talk on one. They will own a diesel tractor, but not gas, and they won't use it to fit a field. They use stationary gas engines, sometimes. Women are subservient, but will drive a buggy to town. They don't vote.

Hopefully this will pique your interest enough to investigate how they live. They are a truly a fascinating people.

It's highly dependent on the bishop in charge, but in general they can have pretty much any modern convenience FOR PURPOSES OF DOING BUSINESS. Just not in the house.

Those look a lot like the ones the old order Mennonites here run. The one's on that DB are too rough looking for these guys here.
