Blizzard victim

Last week a blizzard blasted through the midwest (where I live) and dumped a bunch of snow along with howling winds. The wife looked out the window and said that part of the shed roof looked like it was coming up. I checked and there was no roof to come up, it had caved in on top of my 40 farmall H and my 39 JD B along with several boats and assorted stuff.
I put some snow shoes on yesterday and tried to see how bad it was. I can't even see the H, all I can see of the B is the steering wheel and shaft are squished and I think my big boat is a loss (the 2 outboards appear to be holding up that part of the roof, not good). Hard to tell with a roof and all that snow sitting on top of everything. Really don't even know where to start, I guess wait till all this damn snow melts which at this rate will be sometime in July. :?

I would call your insurance company right away. May or may not have coverage on an out building. My carport roof sagged last April in heavy wet snow and it was covered.

Thdrduck,

Bummer. Sorry to hear it.

A lot of roof failures in MN after that last big blizzard: some businesses, some barns, some schools, machine sheds, and even a post office.

Hopefully your belongings will be alright! Like others said, tractors are tough, maybe just some minor repairs will be needed.

In 2010 we had back to back blizzards here on the East Coast. Many roofs caved in. I had just put up a
pole barn so the metal roofing was new and slippery. Snow drifts slid off. Older roofs get rusty. Snow
does not slide off. Also, you need to pay close attention to the lower cord splice joints on the trusses.
They pull apart then collapse. Things to consider.

Get the insurance adjuster on it as soon as possible. Take many pictures now. Sorry about your loss. I made a roof rake with
extendable 18 foot handle. I convinced my neighbors to use it and they are glad they did. Jim

I'm sorry to hear your having a roof cave in like that. We must not have the right winds or direction for our sheds. We don't seem to get all that much snow on our roofs and don't ever clean one off. They just melt off in a week or so if it warms up enough. This is in MI.
I do think ours being made from rough sawn lumber and being Oak,Ash,Elm have all made a difference on that. We bolt our plates to the poles with a scab piece across the joint too.

i know how you feel a shed where i keep equipment fell in. i can see the hitch on the bale trailer but that is all. the chisle plow is half buried but
doesnt seem to damaged. i put round bales next to the haybine so if the rest comes down hopefully it will land on the bales and not the reel. i did
get a load of hay my boat and bush hog out. there was a herd of dairy cows near chatfied that was disperesed and one near lewiston that was also
disperesed. the neighbor down the road had a loafing shed come down on his cows he wont tell me how many he lost but i think it was quit a few. hes
68 and doesnt know if he will rebuild or sell out hes organic and not making any money either.i have herd of over 2 dozen building being destroyed.
they range from an old barn built over 100 years ago to fairly new sheds. good luck i hope things work out for you

I know how you feel. Hurricane Michael was over 5 months ago and still cleaning up around here. Probably 200 square miles that will nevaer look the same! Rain ever since so a big wet sloppy mess!

Sorry to hear that, with all the wind the last couple of weeks I'm surprised every thing didn't blow down. In June 1999 we had a cattle shed blow through the house on a Sunday afternoon, raised the roof on the south side, demolished the wall, busted the plaster in every room but the bathroom, tin was riveted in to the house wall and roof and one 2x4 went clear through and out the other side. I don't want to see anything like that again. Even had a chimney laying on the bed when the dust settled.
