3910 clutch

Good evening all: I put a new cluth assembly in this 3910 Ford tractor and after put back together the throw out bearing has lots of travel before contacting pressure plate and very little travel after it contacts plate and will not release. Anyone know what I might have done wrong. I have to take it apart but wondered if anyone might know what to look for. I figure the shaft in the throw out yoke must be turning. Anything else on this weird pressure plate that can cause this. Thanks, Dave

i not sure why but seem to me like lot then new clutches for that ford tractors that i install i have to shorten the connecting rod about a inch, i make sure i have enough threads so as clutch wears it can be adjusted then cut it to fit just maks sure you do a good job of welding it back together

If you hook linkage up with zero free play the pedal won't travel far enough to release cluch. I put a come-along on clutch arm and still won't release. I have to take it apart to see what is the trouble. Thanks

I am not following, you stated that the throwout must travel a long way before touching the clutch, that is the free play.

It travels a long way. i'm guessing a couple inches before it gets to the pressure plate. the pressure plate has 4 fingers with a ring setting on them held on by springs. never have i seen one like that before. the ring has to slide on the throw out bearing slide. looks impossible to get it all lined up. you can see one on the picture in the parts list on this site.

NOT sure what you've got going on, but the aftermarket doesn't always get the lined plate thickness correct (which affects pressure plate "finger height") nor do they always get the pressure plate "finger height" correct.

Don't know if this applies to this application, but if the flywheel is a "stepped" design and is resurfaced, it's up to the machine shop to get the distance between the "steps" correct.

it hasn't been resurfaced. I put a clutch in it 4 or 5 years ago with no problems and it started slipping and he wanted it changed. Pressure plate was burned bad but the flywheel was still excellent condition. the clutch disc was worn out on the pressure plate side and hardly worn on the flywheel side. strange to say the least. the original one was the same way. it is a bear to split anyway.

If the throw out bearing is too far from the fingers on the pressure plate, and there is no more adjustment then the finger height is wrong. I ran into this from noted rebuilder/parts supplier at my work. I had to split one tractor 2-3 times to get the height adjusted. We ended up using a different rebuilder. End of problem. If your flywheel is machined correctly, then I would bet it's the pressure plate finger height not set correctly by the rebuilder. Mark.

You said the disc looked or was worn out on only one side. Sounds like the disc is not bottoming out in the flywheel to start with then. Now for the travel problem are you sure the fork fingers are in the right location? Or on the correct side of the throw out bearing? Was there a block under pressure plate to hold the fingers in some for assembly that didn't get taken out. This would have been between the fingers and the pressure plate case to hold the fingers in some. Till bolted to the flywheel.

Did you remove the metal shipping clips from the pressure plate? I sold a kit to a friend of mine a while back and he installed it himself. He didn't remove the clips and had to split the tractor again. When I install a clutch and we do lots of them, I roll the tractor back together, put two bellhousing bolts in it and hook up the linkage and adjust the freeplay and check the PTO if it is a 2 stage. If it's not right it comes back apart right then.
