Lake Erie Bill of Rights

It's being voted on today in Toledo, Oh. Are any of you in NW Ohio and SE Michigan following this? Seem like it could cause a lot of problems for the (wink) cruel, nasty, profit-driven farmers in the area.

Kinda like that guy in Iowa trying to sue a drainage district. If this passes,I don't see it standing up in court as being constitutional. If it does hold up and I was in the watershed,I'd just throw some seeds in the ground then collect the crop insurance.

Reading it,its not a lot different in ways from what the state and Feds are doing to protect the Chesapeake Bay here in VA,MD and PA.You ain't seen nothing yet really, the Mean Green Deal folks are only one election away from making their agenda the law of the land.

I believe it is prudent.

The only reason the lawsuit in Iowa failed is the Iowa constitution states that farming cannot be infringed on, this is from the 1850s.

Might get a nutrient management plan or keep good records of soil tests ,fertilize applications. Then if they try to come after you, there is a solid paper trail to protect your operation. Fellow could prove he is following accepted standards.

The trouble is "that guy in Iowa" is the head of the Des Moines water works and while his suit didn't get what he wanted, he sure made a lot of noise and he has a lot of people convinced that fertilizer use including manure application needs to end in Iowa. Lots of people don't have a clue where their food comes from.

I agree. I have grid sampled and used variable rate application for years for environmental and financial reasons. It makes no sense to over apply for any reason. Interestingly, the "big, bad farmers" have adopted this practice much more than the small scale farmers, yet they are the ones vilified in the public discourse.

Ya,then the doofus was putting the nitrates right back in the river so they were somebody else's problem downstream. But that's a whole 'nuther issue. He was going after an entity, namely a water district, that had no structure or legal standing, other than that it was a place wasn't he? I guess there would be some similarity there,if Iowa voters did what Toledo voters are voting on today, that's giving a geographic location "rights".

I think he is going against farming practices in general. The water district was his target to shoot at. Iowa's clean water initiative is a voluntary system instead of a state mandated system and his goal is to create very strict regulations that would significantly restrict fertilizer use across the state. And yes, Des Moines does dump everything back into the river downstream. The joke is, when Ottumwa runs low on water, they call Des Moines to tell everybody to please flush their toilets. :)

This whole thing in Toledo strikes me as being anti ag. It's hitting me close to home today after going to an heirloom seed swap with my wife Sunday. The colossal ignorance of some of these anti ag types is like getting hit in the head with a baseball bat.

Ignorance is one thing. Stupidity is another. And I think we have a whole lot of both out there. There is a remedy for ignorance but stupid makes you want to hit your head against the wall (or maybe their head). It would be interesting to know the percentage of Americans who have never grown so much as a row of green beans or carrots or lettuce. I think we would be amazed. Shoot, a significant number don't even have a lawn to mow anymore, let alone a garden. There is not even a baseline to start to educate them. And there is no incentive for them to learn. They just go to the store and fill their cart with cheap groceries.

I'm telling you,it's scary. One guy said "Mark my word, some day it'll be illegal to even own heirloom seeds.". Another one told a vendor he couldn't get seeds from him because he was from too far away. The vendor asked what he meant by that,he told him that he wasn't "local". He told him that his seeds weren't acclimated for his climate and soil type. The vendor told him "They're seeds, you plant them and the plants become acclimated to your soil and climate.". Nope, nope, that's not how it works,I need local seeds.

His goal had nothing to do with water quality, it was to make a name for himself with the Polk and Story county progressives. Lot of tax money wasted totally for political purposes. Next time the state government changes parties he'll get appointed to a high paying state office. That's how it works, you carry the flag and if you lose, we reward you with the backup plan.

If you don't think there are varieties of plants that do well in different places and not others then why do seed companies sell varieties and claim they are for a certain area?
Try planting some Banana seeds at your place and see how they do(LOL)

I'm talking variety, not species. My wife has tomato seeds from Ukrane,Russia,Greece, all over the world and they grow fine. I think seeds from northern Indiana will grow in mid Michigan without a problem. Should I not be planting seed corn grown in Mexico or Hawaii because the climate is different?

Seeds companies claim certain varieties of corn do better in some places than others,I see in their ads.Stands to reason that a variety adapts to a certain climate especially open pollinated as growers save seeds that do the best in their area.Take meat goats Boers from South Africa where its pretty dry don't do well here in Virginia get foot problems and worms associated with the wet weather on the other hand Kikos from New Zealand aren't bothered by the wet and humidity.

Sad part is all the lawns that are over sprayed ,fertilized, and watered. So the excess runs into the water sheds though that is not the problem. My sil's sister was telling me about some deal she was doing in her yard foe some problem. I told her how much she needed for the square footage she had. She told me how much she used I said that is was about 4 times what she needed to use. Was surprised by that, when the guy was telling her what she needed.
