First Time Backhoe owner, Lots of question. Case 580CK

Hello Everyone,

I just got a Case 580CK backhoe. I am not sure what year it is, but it has a G188D engine in it. The tractor is not running at this time. I got it with the engine apart and am looking to put it back together. I have found some basic information online so far that I will try and use to put everything back together. Apparently the bottom end of the motor is already rebuilt and I have the head apart, cleaned and have the valves lapped so far. Will try and start putting the engine back together this weekend. I have not been able to find a picture of the motor with the valve cover removed. Would be good just to see how it all comes together. I guess I could figure it out but if someone could show me a couple of photos it would be great and easier to put back together.

Also if there are some photos with the engine assembled in the tractor just to see where everything goes it would be good as well.

I am sure that I will have other questions as well, but if someone could show me some photos it would be great so far.

Welcome Kolnerspieler!

Can't help you with the Case advise, but one thing I would strongly suggest...

Get yourself a shop manual!

They are not that expensive, usually find a used one on Ebay.

It will reliably answer your questions, easily pay for itself with mistakes not made!

Hello and welcome to the forum, Dad bought a '66 580ck when I was a teen, did lots of work with and on the unit, until you get a good parts manual, you can find the blow up pics and all the part numbers on line.

Do a search for "Medicoind, com" in the title banner click on "search for Case parts" then under the Case logo click on "find parts by model", then type in "580 ck" in the right area, scroll down to (580), click on it and look at all the pics by group.

Most parts are available at your local Case industrial dealer.

Enjoy and good luck.

Like said you NEED a service manual, and do not waste your money on a almost worthless I&T one, spend a couple extra bucks and get a Case one it will walk you step by step through the steps you are asking about,, a 580CK and 580B have the same exact powertrain and are much easier to find and are also available through any Case CE (Construction) dealer, like others have said that is still a very good machine today and was the #1 machine of its day, we sold thousands of 580's from 66-76, also look for a correct operators manual as it has much needed info to keep your machine running like it should for the rest of your life

You should go down to the case
forum, they have lots if
knowledge down there. I'm not
real up on those engines, but in
general grinding valves on a
diesel engine is not a good idea
because it lowers compression
making them harder to start. I
know the larger cases are
especially sensitive to that and
you need to just replace the
valves and seats. But I would
certainly ask on the case board
below.

With the bottom end together and valves done you should have her running in another ten minutes.
