Power tool brand preference?

Does any of you who makes a living in the trades have a hands down go to or stay away from brand? I figure it?s best to pick a brand and stick with it so the batteries match one another. I have a few Dewalt tools now and was looking at a 1/2? hammer drill. I know Milwaukee is a good brand and so is Makita Bosh and some others.

I think as long as you buy a higher end model it?s hard to go wrong these days. I love my makita corded tools, especially the older made in North America ones but have settled on Milwaukee for cordless.

Today unless you pay a big price and get Festool tools, the rest are pretty much junk with the exception of Milwaukee which I would consider a mid range. I've started buying Harbor Freight tools because of the way tools are made today. Since the majority of tools are junk, might as well go cheap. I find that Harbor Freight tools are not any worse for quality.

I'm not a tradesman but I have been very happy with Milwaukee M18 and M12. Do you have buddies that you work on projects together with? Get what they have so you can share chargers. What does your electrician boss have? Red, yellow, blue they're all good. Don't waste money on generic China batteries, though. If you already have Dewalt, I would stick with that.

Thank you,my electrician boss has Makita in bigger stuff and Milwaukee 12v in compact drills. I?ve had my eye on a 18v Hole Hawg but I don?t need an expensive drill like that at this stage in the game. I would like a 1/2? t handle with hammer option for running a hole saw or big auger bits and saw a 20v Dewalt brushless with 5ah batteries for a good price on Amazon. I?ve used his Makita cutting a 4? hole through 3/4? maple in a cupboard and it got so hot you could smell it but it still did the job.

My first cordless set was a Dewalt with the saw and drill. Three years ago we bought a Milwaukee m18 1/2 impact and have been going to all Milwaukee tools because of battery interchangeability. The last tool I would give up is the 1/2 inch impact. It gets daily use. I do not think there is anything bad about Dewalt either. Pick one of the two and keep adding. Tom

I'm a trim carpenter. I decided on the Makita 18 volt when all my tools were stolen in 2005! Milwaukee and Makita 18 volts were just new then! I love my Makita. I would avoid DeJunk as much as possible!

Somehow I've acquired about a dozen assorted Ryobi 18V. cordless tools that all take the same battery. I seem to get along with them OK.

There's been more than a few times I wished I had a compact M12 to fit somewhere tight, but I don't think my M18 has ever been too small. Even used it to drill ice fishing holes. Get both!

Makita and Bosch for drills, drivers and sanders. Hitachi and Metabo for grinders. Festool for specialty saws. Skil for rough saws.

The Milwaukee is 100 more than the Dewalt and 70 less then the Makita all brushless hammer drill kits with 5ah batteries. I?m starting to lean towards Milwaukee?

I run Milwaukee M18 for the cordless stuff. Be aware that there are different levels of tool within the same line. The kits that are frequently on sale have lower power ?home owner? tools. I don?t know that the quality is any lower, but the power sure is. My big M18 drill, you cannot hold it in low gear. It will twist out of your hands. Not all will do that.

Would this one be similar to the one you have?

I'v got Ryobi, been really happy with them for years...

But something is up with their chargers and batteries of late.

On the 3rd charger in 2 years at work, just threw away 2 of the latest batteries and one older one. The 2 newer batteries had circuit board failure, the older one had a bad cell.

I hope they aren't trying to pull a move to force sale of batteries now that the tools are out there.

I may be shopping for different tools.

I've had Makita, Skill and elcheapo Chinese junk. A buddy has Milwaukee and I liked it so I now have 6 M18 Tools. I have done a lot of work with the drill and driver. If you are doing any PVC work the Hackzal is amazing. If the grease gun and ratchet were M18, I would have them also. I wish now I had bought brush less.

I have over 20 different Milwaukee m18 tools. I just bought the new 7 1/4 circular. It cuts thru oak lumber like a corded saw. I also have Milwaukee wrenches and like them better than my snap on. ( dont buy your wife the cordless weedeater for mothers day, it wont end well!)

You are right. The last i checked there were only 12 volt. When I checked now there are M18 grease guns and ratchets. Thanks very much.

I started with Bosch back in 92 or so. They make good tools but with the last stuff I bought which was in 01 or so I couldn't keep a battery charger around, went through 3 of them in 2 years.
Actually bought the Performaxx stuff from Menards and used that for a while around the farm and it wasn't too bad but not as robust as the bigger brands. For the average homeowner they would be a very good inexpensive alternative.
Got talked into a Milwaukee Fuel impact a few years ago at the local farm show and since then I have bought nothing but Milwaukee Fuel tools. Use them at home on the farm and at work.
They hold up quite well and the Fuel series has gobs of power.
