OT: Zenith of Steam Locomotives

Only a single experimental S-1 was built.

It was capable of speeds above 150 MPH and could sustain nearly 7,500 HP at 100 MPH.

This was pre WWII, folks.

Worth watching.

Could have done with some commentary instead of the "apocalypse" type music, but I did at least learn that it existed. Thanks for posting.

Indeed, he was, as well as several style-setting Studebakers.

He was one of, perhaps "the," innovator of industrial design.

Sad, indeed, Steve.

What a machine, and what a loss.

She was representative of her era, the optimism as the US emerged from the great depression just prior to WWII. The Pioneer Zephyr represented this era even more.

The Pioneer Zephyr hit the rails in the mid 1930s resulting in news much like did the Apollo Missions in the late 1960s/early 1970s.

Her 600 HP Winton Diesels, the ancestor of all Detroits, could power the lightweight aluminum and polished stainless steel Zephyr to speeds exceeding 100 MPH and did not need to stop for water every 100 miles or so.

The entire Zephyr weighed far less than did the S-1 locomotive sans tender.

For those of you who might be interested, the Pioneer Zephyr has been preserved and is on display at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.
