Cost of license for vehicle in your area?

FIRST LETS NOT GET IN TO ARGUMENTS ON THIS! Been quite a bit of talk on Cheaper or to costly here or there. So for average passenger vehicles both new and old what does your state or county charge? For me older ones its roughly $75-150 per year and newer ones $300-1000, sales tax when purchased. Farm and antique ones are much cheaper but farm goes by weight (example a wheeler vs 1 ton) Oh yes there are some small fees for plates, paperwork and so on. They use a system of value to prevent this its 3 years old and I bought it for $1 so I pay very little routine!!!

My county the car and light truck plate are the same price about $30 specialty plates are $60 farm plates start at $40 for the lowest weight and up

Here farm plates are about $50 and not weighted. Til 10 years old others are rated on value so a new car can be $400/year. After 10 years they are around $50.

New tags for my 2014 Silverado were $165 here in Michigan. We keep arguing about gas tax wich is supposed to go for road repair. Each increase comes with a promise of better roads but they are still terrible. Come here some time and experience them!!!

Here where I live in Wyoming, they go by what the vehicle costs new for the cost of the plates. My 2011 Ram when new, cost me $750 in license cost. It gradually goes down until it hits a certain age, then the cost stays the same. This year, the Ram is $286.00

2005 dodge caravan $600 a year
2004 dodge 4x4 , 4 door farm plates $570 a year
We have no fault insurance. So if in an accident I pay my $200 deductible
We get fair market price for said vehicle when written off.
I have always got more money than I paid for all of mine
I have written off 6 or 7 in 23 years. Only 1 where they gave me 100percent at fault
I hit the left hand ditch to avoid killing a lady. She hit me in the ditch.
There was only a hill to go up on the right and I would have rolled so I had no choice but to hit the left side. She hit my passenger door 6 ft in the ditch.
2001 Volvo highway tractor. $3500 a year plus $1800 extra insurance.
I think it?s cheap for what we get in return. NO hassle and no one sues anyone.

In Kentucky, property taxes based on assessed value. Plate cost depends on plate. My 2002 dually with 26k plate around 285. 16 F250 with 22k plate 350

All "regular" street vehicles up here (cars, pickup trucks, etc) pay $85 per year CDN for plates, so about $65 USD. Motorcycles are less, I assume BIG trucks are more. Not sure about farm trucks. Depending on where your last name lands in the alphabet, your month of expiry varies. At one time years back, everyone in Alberta expired at the end of March. That must have created a bit of a log jam.

"Antique" license plates are intended for vehicles that are over 25 years old but can only be operated in connection with car shows, car meets, car rallies, parades, and other official car club functions. There is a one-time fee and it does not have to renewed annually.

For a car in Iowa it's 1% of list price for X number of years. It never goes under $20.00 no matter the age, unless grandfathered in before th Red party got control. '68 Mustang--$14.00 '15 Escape $310.00.

I insure several older vehicles (1980, 1999, 2000, 2002) for $41 each per year in Minnesota. I don't recall the cost for newer vehicles -- the newest I have are 2008 and 2009. I know they are well under $100 at that age and heading for the cheapest $41 a year.

WOW ! I don't know how many of you can afford to live where you do ? Here in Ohio and my county and township (because it does vary) a car plate is $ 39.50 per year every year you own it. They go by your birthday. When you buy a new or used one you pay sales tax when you get the title transferred. My county is 7%. On a NEW one if you trade in you only pay tax on the difference. So far this is a one time only deal no other taxes per year. Liability insurance is mandatory. But if you have anything decent you get full coverage.

For years i paid between 75 to 128 a year of pick ups and then the higher price for may one ton as i have not owned a car myself since 73 . A few years back while working on a customers tractor at his farm he got on my donkey about not having a Vietnam vet's plate . I told him i really did not want to advertise the fact that i was a nam vet . as i still feel the stigma of being one . the altercation i had at the air port in N J while waiting on a flight home just a couple hours after being discharged had already showed me how some felt about us returning vet's . So i never brought it up much . well Bob kept on bugging me about it as he was a nam vet serving 68-69 in artillery , where as i was a 67-68 vintage and was in the heavy fighting of the Tet offensive from day one of the start up till i was extracted out of the bush three hours after my org. freedom flight had are ready left with out me . But anyway bob kept it up and to just shut him up i said ok fine i'll get the plate . Well plates for my truck were due and i went in with my paper work this was something i dreaded was going to the DMV due to one girl that worked there , we will call her Wicked Wanda as she was just plum nasty she did not drive acar to work each day she must have flowen her BRoom to work with mutafloal rose bushes for a saddle . I get there and take a number and start counting to see just who i was going to end up with and yep it was her , i really don't want to deal with HEr and in comes this woman with four screaming brats and the devil whispered in my ear and said Swap numbers with her . So i did as Wanda deserves this . Well my number is called and i get a NEW girl a NICE new girl and i explain that i want my Vietnam vet plate this time around , and she says do you have your DD 214 and i said yes and layed it out for her to look at While she is looking at it from the far right side of the counter Wicked Wanda shouts at the top of her LUNGS WHAT DOES HE WANT and the young NICe girl say he wants his Vietnam vet's plate . She then say YOU COME DOWN HERE and take care of this woman and I WILL TAKE CARE OF HIM . Oh God here we go i can feel my PTSD coming on now . She comes up and first thing out of her mouth was DO YOU HAVE YOUR DD 214 and i said yes it is right in front of you , she slams her hand down on it and spins it around and now it upside down then slams her hand on it again and spins it back right side up then grabs it with both hands and picks it up and starts reading it , all of a sudden her face changes her mouth drops open her attitude changes and she say you don't want the Vietnam plate you want the purple heart plate , NO i just want the Vietnam plate i don't need to advertise that i got my donkey shot up over there , oh no you want the purple heart plate and insists that i take that plate and i why ??? and she says because they are FREE along with your drivers license and i ask her how long has this been going on and she tells me oh for a long time it was published in the paper many years back . Well my eagle eyed wife never saw anything about it my mother never saw anything about it and my Grand mother never saw anything about it . I told her i wanted a refund for all the years back that i paid for . yea like that would happen . This is the only thing i have ever received from my time in .

License fees are a little higher in MN than some other states, but our roads are a little better too, and we have frost and snow removal to deal with. The licence for a new vehicle is quite high, it's proportional to the value of the vehicle, if you can afford a expensive car, you can afford the license! At least we don't have sales tax on food and clothing like Arizona!

Here in PA, standard passenger car plates are $37 per year. Vanity plates and specialty plates are charged a one time fee to issue them, then they cost the same as regular plates.

Trucks are charged by weight class. They start out around $58.50 if I recall correctly and go up from there.

There are a few discounts available. Retired status allows you to register one vehicle for $10 per year.

Farm plates vary from a handwritten sigh stating farm use to various forms of limited use plates depending on usage.

Also, I take offense at your opening statement. You are not the moderator here. You are not in charge here. You do not need to include instructions or orders in your post. Doing so only lays down a challenge. If you think that your post is controversial, maybe you should think twice before posting it.

2004 F 250, $78.75. 2016 F150, $76.25, 24' PJ, $133.75, 2011 16' BigTex $68.25. The trailers are not farm use registered.

I have found that the states that have high annual registration fees or annual tax on vehicles based on value often have much lower property tax and lower or no state income tax compared to us here in the tax capital of the US , New York. Here my pickup red is $46/ yr car (Jeep Patriot) is $26/ yr. Our county adds a $5/ yr fee to each registration. Also sales tax every time a vehicle changes hands, new or used. These fees are low compared to many states but we also pay sales tax on most things as well as some of the highest school tax and property tax and state income tax in the nation.

We might have cheaper medical but our vehicle insurance is a lot more. I pay over $1100.C for a 2006 CHEVY Colorado and over $700. for my 98 CHEV one ton. I guess we all have fringe benefits where we live.
Dave

Kansas - 2007 3500 Chevy - $162 including multiple fees

1995 42' hopper trailer - $67 including multiple fees
1994 tandem axle tractor - $154 including multiple fees (only 20,000 lb, will have to increase when put back into service)
1990 24' flat bed goose neck trailer - $67 including multiple fees

Here in Texas my 99 chevy 3/4 ton costs 54.00+1.00 dps +10.00 road/bridge +7.50 half of 14.50 inspection fee, other half paid inspection place +4.75 for processing. 1983 Ford F800 tagged for 28,000 with same add ons is few cents short of 400.00. Has no DOT.

Mike ..... I think (not totally sure) that some of the replies are from a system that might include registering your licence plates PLUS insurance, that might account for some of those big numbers. Someone might comment on that ....

Being a disabled VET mine are free. But if I let them run out. They charge $10.00 to replace them. I think vanity plates are $110.00.

Mike M- That's why a lot of residents across the state line here in KY find a way to register their vehicles in Ohio instead of KY. You wouldn't believe how many neighbors I had that had their vehicles with Ohio plates. In KY you pay a percent of Kelly Blue Book value EACH year PLUS registration, plate and clerk fees.

The stae tries to crack down on the people that do this but they can't keep up with them.

Shaun ...... do you have to get your vehicles inspected every year?

Up here generally no .... unless you buy an older vehicle (not sure how many years old it has to be) from someone and put insurance on it with your insurance provider. Once you do that the first time, they never seem to bother you for it later on. The government does not get involved with any of this inspection stuff, maybe on bigger trucks, etc. For example, I bought a 2002 used Dodge Caravan about ten years ago, it was 6 years old at the time. My insurance outfit did not ask for an inspection and has not asked for one since. If I bought a 2002 Caravan today though, they would require one. Pretty easy inspection to pass, nothing on emissions or anything like that, just some basic safety stuff.

To someone asking below about licence and insurance.
Yes it is all inclusive. 1 million liability and all that jaz in the cost.
So $600-$1200 will cover everything for almost all cars and light trucks.

Commercial (non-farm pick-ups get commercial plates in NE) good for 10 ton are in the $30 range.

Title transfer, cdl transfer, and plates were less than registration renewal would have been in Pennsylvania.

Hey Vet. Good story and glad you took them up on free tabs. I was in after Korea and before Viet Nam. Don't know how you guys did it and then to get all the snark when you got out of there. Tougher than me.

In NYS I'd say it runs an average for us of about $75.00 a year. Depends on the vehicle type, GVWR, etc. But the reg is good for 2 years. To transfer a title runs $100.00, annual inspection $21.00 and all trailers have to be registered and inspected along with power boats, motorcylces, ATVs, snowmobiles, etc. There are some farm exemptions. Our State taxes put us in the top 3 for fuel costs and insurance on your auto is crazy. I have 5 vehicles on the road between me, my wife and oldest son (long term borrowed truck) and we have no tickets and only a car/deer accident. I only have full coverage on 2 vehicles and the others have liability with glass coverage, called comprehensive here. I've been with one company for over 30 years simply because no one else can even come close to matching their rates and I pay over $1800 a year.

Considering the above, I don't buy the idea that "the state with highest registration fees are cheap in other areas". NYS gets every penny out of you they can, any way they can, anywhere they can. Don't even get me started on property and school taxes!

In Louisiana our plates for private cars and trucks was $10 per year.
They were letting bigger pickups (over 6000 gvwr) get the regular car plates.

Then a few years ago the state cracked down.
Any pickup over 6000 gvwr needs a truck plate.
And they raised the rate on cars based on the value.

So now for a car it is .01% of value or $10 per $10,000 per year
A pickup with a gvwr between 6000 lbs and 10,000 lbs is $28 per year.

Others are.....

Very few states have plate fees less than us and we even have $75,000 homestead exemption on property taxes.
That means you pay no tax on first $75k of property value.
But we do have high sales tax it the 9 to 10 percent range.

Also our poor roads and schools show our low tax rate.

Cars and light trucks $69.50 or so depending on what county you are in here in Tennessee. Larger trucks based on the registered weight up to around $ 1,300.00 or so .

I just paid almost $800 for my semi, trailer, straight truck and 2 pickups. It would be alot higher but we can plate the semi and straight truck for the empty weight with farm tags. The personal vehicles are do in October and with the wife's new SUV and 2 year old van plus 3 other vehicles is around $1200.

Good story, well told. We have some customer Svc ppl here like that--you cringe if you have to deal with them. Looks like this one did you a good turn.

My vehicles are all around 2000-2001 model year. To get the new sticker every year costs around $145. One-time sales tax fee at 6% of purchase price when vehicle changes hands. Minimum is based on $500 selling price for old clunkers.

Historic tags are avail for vehicles 25 yrs and older. Fees are less but use is supposed to be limited. Ppl use these historic-tagged cars as daily drivers to get around the veh safety inspection requirement and there seems to be little if any enforcement.

Of course mandatory insurance is a separate issue and everyone tries to get the best deal they can find. Maryland has typically high fees for everything but for registering vehicles it's actually pretty reasonable.

Not sure about Cars. Pickups with Farm tags are based on weight. Semi tractor is about 150.00 year. Apportioned Plate for 100,000 was around 2600.00 or so. That was for the same semi tractor that with farm tag is 150.00
Semi Trailers are a permanent non transferable 300.00. Smaller trailers are cheaper based on something. Not sure what or how it is figured since I don't have any smaller trailers. Though they are also a permanent non transferable plate also.
The commercial insurance for the truck (semi) with trailers was about 8,000.00 Per year for liability cargo and bobtail. For the same truck with Farm plates insurance is about 1200.00 per year.

In Wisconsin, We have a fixed rate for passenger cars and light trucks. I have a 2018 Ford F-150 and I think if I remember right the license was $90. Would be the same for a car. We pay 5.5% sales tax when we buy it based on what we paid out right for it or what we paid trade difference. Title transfer is $85. Value has nothing to do with license fee. Antique vehicles pay a one time license fee of I think $50 which is good as long as your own it.

John, when I was serving my Uncle, I heard that you folks were providing servicemen with license fees in the single digits. Texas was running about double that as I recall at the time.

Today, an auto or half ton P/U runs about $60 plus $10 for local road improvement. Sales taxes on purchases are a flat 6.25% without the normal 2% local fee that gets added for most purchases excepting groceries....no charge.
