My Farmall Super C

I drove up to Burgh Implements this morning in western PA and met up with the guy who said he could haul my tractor.

It all went very smoothly, he had an F550 with a flat bed and it loaded very easily, it took less than 15 minutes to load the tractor. I paid $1000 for the tractor, and I am very happy about it.

I got it home, my grandfather helped unload it, and I practiced driving it around my neighborhood. I have a lot to learn, especially about how to shift gears considering I have never driven a manual transmission before.

Anyway, I figured I would post some pictures.

Also, I have a question about shifting. Is it best to shift while moving, for example, to go from 1st to 2nd to 3rd, or should I stop the tractor and then start it moving in 3rd? Also, how do I downshift, can I do it on the move or should I stop the tractor before downshifting?

Very nice tractor, do not shift gears while moving. What ever
gear you select is what you drive it in until you stop and select
another gear, it?s not like a vehicle where you depress the
clutch and change gears while driving, select the gear you
want and stay in that gear until you stop

Well, my opinion, do not try to shift on the move. GeaRS are not synchronized, NOT SYNCHRONIZED, and we see many transmission rebuilds with busted and worn gears, trying to shift. Now it CAN be done, if you are very experienced, and can exactly match engine speed to transmission speed, on the go, on the move, and know how to double-clutch. Easy answer, tho, is to start off in the gear you want, and call it good.

You do not shift gears moving. That tractor (not all) will take off and go in any gear from stopped. It has no syncronizers in
it at all. just straight cut spurr gears that are moved into mesh with the lever. Shifting on the go will tear the teeth off of
the gears or chip them. High gear (4th) will require a little clutch slipping at very first. Use the clutch as a on off device
as much as possible. Smooth engagement over a half second to a second, is best and prolongs clutch life for years and years. My
350U still has it's original clutch and it is a 1957. Your choice of the SC is perfect welcome to our obsession. Jim

Had to laugh; yes, it's good to admit the truth, it will set you free ??. it is our obsession.

That's a good looker. Grille by itself looks like it might be worth plus 300 bucks, most of them are smashed flat. Think you'll find a lot more uses for that tractor than an old H.

Thank you everyone for the kind words! I will make sure to stop the tractor before putting it in gear.

When I am going down a hill, should I put it in 1st gear, have the throttle on low, and let it go, or what should I do about going downhill?

You will really come to love that tractor, the sound of the engine, the gear whine, the
smell, the ease of operation and maintenance. Did you get a manual for it yet? Happy for
you!

You shouldn't need to concern yourself with downshifting to go downhill unless you are pulling a significant load. Just have your foot ready at the brake pedals in case the engine gets racing too fast.

BOTH brake pedals if going down hill especially if pulling a load or turning, one pedal at a time in those conditions will over turn the
tractor.

Nice looking Super C. I have a C and I love it though getting on and off is a bit of a pain at 62!

Dave

I will be sure to post updates on my tractor. I found a free PDF of the owners manual online, now I just need to buy a technical manual for a Super C.

Of your going to lock the brakes together, the recommended way for hills and roads, make sure they are adjusted equal on both sides or you will only be applying one brake anyway. The important thing on hills is go up or down, not across if possible. If you are going across, turn down, not up. If you need to go across a hill go at an angle up or down is safer than straight across.

Now you're going to need to get that FastHitch, I just dug out some of My Super C miscellaneous junk collection, gives you an idea of what was available for those tractors.

I think u made a wise decision!!! It will be a very nice tractor project to start out on!!! Once u get it done will be a nice size to haul to shows, won?t require a heavy trailer or truck to haul it if (when) down the road u decide u want to get a trailer,,,, ( to haul ur ?next? project,,,,,,,lol)!!! You realize u have just exposed yourself to ?old iron fever? and there?s no antidote,,,,,,,LOL!!

Nice tractor, it should be a better fit for you than an H. Our church used to have a C with a belly mower.

A general rule of thumb is most engines won't hold back as much load as they can pull. If you can't pull up a hill in 4th gear, don't try to descend that hill in 4th gear, the engine won't be able to hold the tractor back. Descend in the same gear as needed to climb the hill or a gear lower.

Enjoy your tractor.

John, it looks like you did very well. Take your time and learn all you can about your tractor.
I have been on tractors over 55 years and have the first one I ever drove and still use it all the time.
ENJOY!!!!
Richard in NW SC

You start in the gear you want to use, it is easier to replace the clutch than the transmission

Thank you everyone! It was such a great feeling to unload the tractor at my house!

When I first tried shifting it, I must have made an error, and two separate times the transmission made a grinding noise, just for a second. I goy the hang of it now. If it only happened those two times, is it enough to do any damage? I just hope I did not cause any damage before I really learned how to drive it.

Good job John--I was about your age when I got my first tractor. Welcome---BUT-be prepared to take some friendly ribbing about the color of your tractor!!!---Tee

Lol. Those old tractors are
real tough and have already
been ground many times. It
takes quite a bit to do
serious damage. It's just not
good and can do harm.

john, nice looking tractor! I have been around Super Cs all my life. they sure are handy.
tip for shifting into gear- if you hold the shift lever against the right front corner of the pattern (ahead of reverse, where there is no gear),
you can hear the gears inside slow down and stop when you depress the clutch. avoids grinding when putting the tractor in gear. I doubt that the
grinding you heard did any damage. I'm sure it wasn't the first (or hundredth) time that has happened in the last 65 years. enjoy.

Great buy for $1000.00. Don?t worry about shifting. It?s not like a car. Put it in the gear that will do the job and leave it there. Also some good advice here
on the brakes. They can help you stop and also steer. Depending on how you use them.

Thanks for help everyone! I honestly do not know what I would do without this forum!

I have a couple more questions now that I got my tractor home. Should I top off the fluid or oil anywhere in the tractor, like motor oil or radiator?

Nice little Super C you have there. Well done. Check your fluids and see how they look. Usually the first thing I do is change all the fluids and filters that way I know what’s in there and how long it’s been in there. Make sure to stop before changing gears wether it’s lower or a higher gear.

Nice-looking tractor, congratulations! Looks like you're in for some good times. Since you're new to clutches I'll offer this: keep your foot OFF the clutch pedal unless you're actually changing gears. Don't use it as foot rest.

Thanks guys! I am going to restore the tractor, not a complete restoration of everything, but definitely a repaint and making sure everything is in very good working order.

Congratulations JV2K. Nice looking ride. I have to say even though I'm an ollie guy a C is on my someday list. I do have a TD6 and a w6.

Very nice!

As a start, would suggest you see what condition and level the the oil and anti-freeze look like. Also the gear oil.

Not sure where you are at, or where the tractor came from, but if it is going to get below freezing where you are at, check the anti-freeze ASAP. There are anti-freeze testers available for around $10. Check youtube. Easy to do. All this kind of depends on where the tractor came from and if it was stored where the tractor could freeze (in which case you are probably ok).

Good luck and keep us posted.

I am going to try to make it to that show. I road bike race and mountain bike race, so maybe there will be a race that weekend in that part of Pennsylvania so I can do two events in one weekend.
