MF 135 complete rebuild

Does anyone know if $1600 would be a fair price for a complete engine rebuild, on a MF135 gas if I remove starter and intake, and exhaust, and haul it to the shop?

That sounds about right, assuming there are no unknown problems found.

It's hard to give a firm estimate on an engine rebuild. Never really know what will be found inside. Asking a shop to give a firm bid will cause them to have to go with a "worse case" bid.

I prefer to do an autopsy first, then start working the numbers.

I don't know. What I DO know is that a "complete engine rebuild" can mean vastly different things--depending on if you're the one doing the rebuild or you're the one paying for it.

May help others here if you can tell what exactly is going into the rebuild--parts, machining, cyl head work, etc. Your shop that gave you the quote should be able to give you a comprehensive list of the work they plan to do.

they are not that hard to do your 1/2 done when you pull it kind of fun to do just get the head reworked and other parts that might need doing . for 1600 what are they doing and you will not know

Seems to me an engine rebuild kit, with pistons rings sleeves and bearings, gaskets, etc should cost around $1,500.00 . A true total rebuild should be about a thousand dollars a hole, including shop charges. So 4 cylinder 4 grand, 6 cylinder 6 grand, for a engine rebuild. Maybe $1,600.00 for just a rig and valve job.

?????????

I am saying the shop to replace all bearings, sleeves, pistons, rework head, and grind crank , or any other machine work needed and to reassemble it ready to bolt back onto tractor.

If they are doing all that for $1600 you have a real bargain. To me, a complete rebuild includes new valves, valve seats, guides, springs, the works, everything that makes it a brand new engine. Anything less than that is a plain overhaul.

yes ,i did mine for way less cause i did it myself. all new pistons and sleeves, everything new except the crank and rods .I love my 135 gasser

Did you remove engine from transmission? Did you remove crank? Did you have a shop go over the head ? Did you have to remove anything on front, timing gear cover, or what about camshaft? You said you didn't replace rods, but don't they come with kit and you did have to remove them to replace pistons right? I appreciate any info as I haven't worked on anything but small engines. Thanks
