Massey Ferguson starter problem

The 165 diesel I fixed up for the State Ag Museum is having starter problems. Went to crank it and the battery was a bit low. would not turn fast enough to start.
When you let go of the key, the starter will keep turning the engine. It may turn for 5 seconds and sometimes longer. Have a master switch in the battery cable to stop it also.
Put a new solenoid on it today and it made no difference.
Took the switch wire off the starter and used a screwdriver and it still did it.
The solenoid is what pushes the gear back to engage the ring gear.
Does the starter gear have threads in it that will help kick it back to disengage the solenoid when it cranks?
I did not want to crank it and ruin the starter by having the engine turning it.
Thanks, Richard in NW SC

Something is wrong inside the starter.

Probably the thrust washer/retainer has broken and is letting the drive spiral too far out, which pushes the solenoid plunger too far back, holding the contact button in.

If the engine starts, it will kick the drive gear back and disengage the starter.

Still, it needs to be looked into.

On Delco starters MAKE SURE the ring and thrust washer is on the drive end to limit the drive gear travel. I've seen the washer break and fall out of the drive nose, then the drive will travel too far and can't disengage like it should. Had that happen on a 265 years ago. ALWAYS have a good battery too, using a low battery too long will "weld" the solenoid washer to the battery solenoid post and cause the same trouble. When that happens a couple good raps with a heavy tool on the solenoid will usually get it to stop.
