OT 2009 Dodge ram 3500

Thought I was moving up, bought this truck, very clean 145,000 miles 1 owner. Drove it 100 miles home all went fine. Changed all fluids and filters then things started to happen. Last week going down the road and the transmission dowshifts in to 4th and its stuck there. Engine light comes on, I make it to an autoparts store and they find 3 codes (P1776, P0841, P0700). One of the codes is a faulty shift solenoid, so I order a shift solenoid and install it. All goes well for a few days, then today it locks in 4th again. Took to transmission shop and he reads the codes and says he thinks its the wiring harness. Several post on the internet about transmissions stuck in 4th, answers are hard to find. Have any of you had this problem and what fixed it. My intention was for this truck to be my pulling truck but now I have concerns. Thanks for your input.

Brother has a 2008 3500. He had to finally replace the transmission harness. It was not cheap. I think $700-800 plus labor. On his the wires would break in the insulation. So finding the bad spot was hard. They are really a good truck. He has had few troubles with his since new.

I assume it's a 68RFE? A somewhat common problem is the SSV valve, in the valve body wearing the bore and causing a bind. If you replaced the shift solenoid/pack you would have had to remove the valve body correct? If the valve body could have been inspected while removed, then the SSV problem could have been verified or eliminated. I don't know if there is a "fix" for the SSV and bore but usually a valve body replacement is needed. I'm not sure there is a external wiring problem (trans to ECM, no internal harness), or if it's a known problem on wiring but careful inspection and tests of the circuits should be done.

Well now we know why it was for sale.
If the tranny never had regular oil changes before changing one with high miles is certain death so it seems over the years.
Did you use the special fluid from the dealer ? Does Dodge still recommend checking them running and in neutral ? the older ones (1996) were that way. If checked in park you would not have enough fluid.

I have a 2013 1500. Just under 50k. Red Lightning bolt show up on the dash. Transmission goes into limp mode. Six weeks later new gas pedal new TCIM, new PCM new transmission control module, new engine wiring harness, new transmission wiring harness.

They fixed it , it runs has been wondeful for 4 thousand miles, Never could tell me what was wrong. FICA paid for all but a new battery.

I will never trust it again!

Many years back i worked in several different Chrysler Plymouth dealerships , first a a mechanic/ Tech and later as a parts manager for a vary large dealership . I still have old friends still working in the industry that i see and talk to regularly . One of my closest old friends is one of the managers at a dealership now . Denny was bragging about the new and improved asin(sp) transmission and billing it as BULLET PROOF . Now over the years i have worked on many Ford , Mo Par Cat and other as i call them SLUSH BOXES and yes i have built some that would take a pounding for a while on the drag strips towing and snow plowing and ya know what they all failed at some point in time . I told Denny when he told me about this new wonder thaat they have only ever made two slush boxes and that is the ones that are out and the ones going out . It also seems that every time i go over that they have atleast two 2500 or 3500's in the service dept with there BULLET PROOF transmission scattered across two work benches . And my comment to the service manager and Denny is always Bullet proof my donkey and the service manager just smiles. Take a page out of the old Iron haulers hand book and it states IF YOU WANT TO HAUL IRON , THEN IT TAKE IRON TO HAUL IT. Yep i have tried the Automatic's in two pick ups for snow removal , First one was in a 73 F 250 with some slight mods done , first mod was scrap the 360 V 8 and drop in a 428 S/CJ , next mode was BUILD a trans . Got five years out of that one before she coughed her cookies , Next was a new 78 F 250 Snow Patrol , First trans went out seven days after i bought it . next one after rebuild by the dealer lasted 8 days , the next rebuild last 6 , Then they replaced it with a new one , it last 9 and each time i was down for a week. When the new trans went i pulled it myself and threw it up on the bench and went at it , I made lots of changes and beefed it way up that one stayed in for FIVE years before it dropped kicked me . Since then i have had nothing but standard transmissions and in that time i have had only one clutch failure due to a throw out bearing . I might be getting old but i can still shift gearsand decide for myself what gear i need for the job at hand.
