Does anyone have any recommendations for what books I should buy before starting my Farmall H restoration? I already have a reprint of the original IH manual, but l am sure you guys know about some more detailed manuals, or even some books detailing the restoration process.

Thanks, John

The letter series Farmalls By Guy Fey Excellent book for a variety of things. Not a technical manual. The Blue ribbon service
manual is premium for the nuts/bolts specifications. Jim

In addition to your tractors operators manual and service manuals, "How to Restore Your Farm Tractor", by Robert N. Pripps, 176 pages, 1992, Motorbooks International, ISBN 0-87938-593-6 is a good book to start with. Your public library system should be able to reserve a copy for you to borrow.

Motorbooks International published a lot of tractor and car books. Some of these older used books are available very cheap plus $4 shipping from Amazon and E-bay. Don't forget this YT website sells some really great books too!

Hi John,

Dopp Creek, I sent you an email. Thank you very much for the offer!

Glad to help. I once had a W-6 and a Farmall M. I swapped the Firecrater pistons out of the W-6 into the M; went to one tractor pull with the M. Had
alot of fun with them. Sounds like you are not afraid to get dirty. Keep asking questions, lots of folks here to help you with your H.

Bank Book.Keep in mind when restoring or doing much of anything to a common tractor like a Farmall H you'll get way more money in it in a hurry than you can ever hope to get out of it.
My advice is do the minimum to get it running and usable and find something reasonably rare that will be worth the time and effort to really restore.I've lost count of the number of guys that have told me they were crazy to sink that much money in a low dollar tractor.

John if that Farmall H is what u want to restore and u have fun learning as u restore it then go for it!! As far as
ever hoping to get ur dollar invested returned, remember it?s impossible to put a dollar figure on enjoyment or
experience or memories!!! If it was all about getting back every dollar invested they?d never sell a fishing boat or a
golf cart!!

Every question that you could ask, has been already been asked and answered by someone else. Google has them for you. Most of them are from this forum.

GO for it! You'll discover things you have no idea on. I restored [am still restoring] my 1950 H, and it is a continual joy. I had no idea that if you drive in all the Christmas parades, if you wave directly AT the little kids and wave, they really love it and all of them grin and wave back.

If you?re thinking of going into restoring tractors to
make a lot of money back away from the tool box
right now before you get hurt . If You want to have
fun and restore a tractor to use and have fun with
then you?ll love every minute of it . Rare tractors are
just that and even harder and more expensive to get
parts for maybe someday you?ll get lucky and find
one but just like your mother always told you be
careful what you wish for

I know I have said this before on this forum, but I will say it again. I have absolutely ZERO intentions of ever selling this tractor or trying to make any money restoring tractors. Once again, I do not want to make any money from this hobby and I am doing it purely for fun.

Thanks FBH44, I hope to take my tractor to some parades, but that might have to wait until I get out of college and buy my own truck and trailer.

That?s what makes it a hobby!!! I?m 69 and have been redoing tractors for the same reason and that?s why I
enjoy it!!! Do it to ur satisfaction, nothing feels better then self satisfaction!!! There will always be those that say u
didn?t do this or that right ( we call them ?correction police?), and what it boils down it most couldn?t do half the job u
just did!!! There?s still a certain amount of pride in that not so perfect paint job u did yourself instead of paying some
bodyshop several thousand dollars to do!! Dig in and enjoy!!!!

Really rare tractors maybe but there are in between tractors that are better to deal with.Instead of an H if you put the same time,$$,and effort in a W4 that won't cost anymore to restore
then you'll end up with a tractor that is worth 2X as much and when taken to a show will be a lot neater piece to have there.Learning how to loose money was never something I had to learn from working on old tractors(LOL)

There is alot more information in a service or shop Manuel than there is in an owners Manuel. Information in
owners Manuel is pretty basic, and leans towards only maintenance info, and not overhaul info.

There are other parades as well. I have seen mothers take the arm of the todler still in a stroler and show them how to wave, early teaching good maners.

John, remember that those replies that are passing along advice on money (and some of us have done that for
a lot of your posts), don't take it personally as criticism. All they are doing is telling you to watch out
how much money you sink into this project. You mention college. Well if your family is well off and
everything is going to paid for you along the way (and maybe after graduation), the whole thing is going to
be easy. But if that isn't the case, it doesn't hurt to have a bit of money in the bank. Do a Google
search and see how much personal debt there is in North America and how many families are on the brink of
being flat broke. I just hope that after all the dust settles that you don't say to yourself that there's a
lot of money sitting there that you could have put to better use. Now that you have tractor though, the one
fellow who advised you to be careful and to do your fix up with caution and not worry about having a show
tractor.

I?ve only ever had one tractor I think I could possibly make money on everything else I?ve lost my butt on

Here is a great textbook about engines how to tear
them apart and how they work it?s a general
information book and covers all engines

Thanks for the help guys!

My family is not rich, but luckily I am well off enough to not have to worry too much about saving up my own personal money for college, that is why I am trying to pursue some hobbies before I get out of college and have to worry about buying a home and making my own money.

Some instant gratification is good and is necessary, but be careful you don't paint yourself into a corner. When your tractor (horse, exotic pet, boat, airplane, dream house, etc.) starts to cut into your education, limit your engineering career, or control your life, don't hesitate to jettison it and move on in life. They are all easily replaceable.

Good points, thank you. I hope I can keep my education and career separate from my hobbies, but I definitely understand what you are saying. If my hobbies interfere with my career or education, I need to change something.
