Dead N Walking

Managed to roll and pull my 1941 9N down to my shop. Non-running tractor due to engine that won't budge. Wanted to see what that is all about. Never rolled it faster than walking pace.

Noticed a rhythmic whirring from transmission or rear end, not sure which. I thought a transmission in neutral would be fairly quiet if all is as it should be. Best description of whirring noise would be one of the old and very bad sic-fi movies where the spaceship is landing and there's a noise that supposedly a spaceship would make. But more mechanical than electronic.

In any case, I know it could be just about anything, or nothing at all, but I wanted to check in with those of you who know about these things. Should I be hearing anything from the tranny?

You probably heard the differential ring gear driving the pinion ans transmission topshaft, using the "coast" side of the gearing.

Pinion turns 6.66 times for each revolution of the rear wheels.

Thank you. Tractor came to me this way, definitely a project. Checked trans oil and it looks very clean and full. I hope it doesn't become a parts machine, but if it does, the rear tires are almost new and fit my Massey. Main thing is to see why the motor is locked up.
