JD212 running problem

i have a 1982 JD212. Right now it is equipped with a snowblower attachment and i was blowing snow and out of now where it just lost all power and died. It would start back up but has limited power and the more throttle i give it, the more it wants to die. I can give it maybe 3/4 throttle before it dies and even while i'm throttling up it doesn't gain much power at all. What could this be?

Could be a loss of gas flow. Carb. adjustment ? strainer in tank clogged ? in line filter if equipped plugged ?
Also don't discount an ignition problem. I had one of those a few years back was dyeing off after running awhile like gas flow , but it ended up having very little point gap.

The points can certainly slip. The location, and the design of the points,
make it a potential problem. I always have to double and triple check.

The second odd issue with a machine you've had a while - the fuel line can start coming
apart on the inside leading to a plugged up carburetor.

Ignition points. That machine still used points and condenser ignition. Good news is they are externally mounted and not too bad to get to. A little rectangle cover over them about 1" by 2" ? held on with 2 screws one top and one bottom. Located along the side of the engine block.

As several others have suggested, gas flow MAY be restricted by debris or ice.

There's a screen on the top of the fuel valve under the gas tank, protruding up into the tank.

They rarely give trouble unless some "bad" or dirty gas has been used.

Also, there's a mechanical fuelpump on the engine, and they occasionally fail.

Another possibility would be that the airfilter is packed with snow, or the paper element is soaked with water that's frozen.

Check for spark with a spark-gap type tester. Only if spark is intermittent or very weak should you mess with the breaker points, especially if not experienced with them.

On this engine, varying the point gap is used to set spark timing, and for proper, efficient operation the timing needs to be checked with a timing light and the point gap tweaked, as needed.

When it's dying, try giving it some choke. If choke helps, look for a fuel problem.

I've had machines where that was the case but turned out to have an ignition problem. So nothing is certain.

I've just had this same problem with my snowblower tractor, an AC 716H, this machine has the Kohler K341, it turned out that my ignition coil was bad. Something came loose (there is a slight rattle if you shake the old coil just right) as I throttled up the vibration of the motor would make the coil cut out. If you check continuity across the primary as you move the coil around it sometimes shows open, sometimes closed. I replaced the coil and it runs like new.

when its running with some throttle and i put the choke on, it seems to run normal and if i throttle up while the choke is on then it revs up and sounds the way it should be running but as soon as i turn the choke off, it dies
