Fords New 7.3 Godzilla

Think I'll stick with my 7.3 powerstroke! Mines old,
but it's paid for! Interesting non the less.

Somehow, this post reminds me of the UPS "We want you to race the truck" ads from back in the '90s.

My first 7.3 Powerstroke stuck it to me rite bad I got over it, it does get'er done.. It was more work and money than I wanted to put into it I almost junked it and would if I could have found a Dodge diesel like I wanted...

Wow how do you break in this beast. Go tree stump pulling or something? I can
remember a friend had a 1964 Ford Galaxy with the factory racing team 427 in
it. He also had the factory lake pipes. Minuteman blue two door sedan. Total
sleeper. That is till you pushed the pedal. What a sled.

That's to bad, my 2000 has 220000 miles on it only
needed a water pump and 2 altanators, rest of the
truck had been good too.

It's like it's 1968 all over again. Iron block, push rods, big cubes. Ford went away from all of that when they dropped the 460 twenty years ago. Of course, in the details, the new 7.3
is probably immensely better. But the concept is more or less the same.

My son & I had a 460 (tweaked a bit) in an old F-150 that took more than a few dollars in bets against Ferrari's. Fun days!

The resurgence of gasoline engines in the LT market continues. Expect such to continue until the feds notice the trend after which they will attack.

Thanks, feds.

I have a couple of Dodges with 488s in them, They are basically 360s (5.9L) with a couple more holes in the block. They are over twenty years old.

I just want one - in a fully sorted chassis in an F150
Just to stick it in one final volley to all the green freaks.
Maybe Mr nnalert is giving Uncle Henry a license?

They are competeing with other makers for the biggest baddest truck. Did
you see the 2020 Chevy HD? Tow capacity of 35,500lbs.
2020 Chevy

How about GM 8.1?s. First one we bought was in 2001, still works
everyday. Tons of power, no engine or trans breakdowns. Several of
them around here. Last year I found an 01 2wd regular cab 2500 with
an 8.1 and only 41k miles. It wants to move and is fun to drive. I call it
my corvette killer for fun

I had a '90 1 ton with it and a 4 sp OD stick, dually hay truck. Only stick vehicle I ever had that I could dump the clutch at idle and the engine kept on
tugging. Sheet metal was a joke however....don't blow on it or it will dent....dual fuel tanks with an after market flat bed were a joke to fill.

My 01 was decent unloaded, but always felt a little low on power. It pulled OK, but lugged bad on hills. Had it looked at several times and nobody could ever figure it out. Traded it in on a Duramax.

Oh, and Ill give it a couple of years to see how it goes, and then start looking at them. After the ordeals Im going through now with my 13 Silverado, Im done with GM.

Yep a few customers have shed themselves of there late model GM's...

BY the late 90's Ford had taken care of a few problematic issues with the 7.3's.. When I had my 95 engine out I updated it I need to go to E fuel will someday...

Was yours automatic or 6 speed? I have the 6 speed and to keep it in the power range it needs to stay above 2000 RPM to pull real good not an engine to lug down with.

It was the auto. The torque converter had started rattling, so I had the trans replaced with a BTS trans and 5R100 converter. It helped, but it still felt under powered. Buddy of mine who used to own a diesel shop went through it once, couldnt ever find anything wrong.

Yaaa Buuuutttt, it as to be faster than this old Chevy Farm Truck.

I was reading about it yesterday. No
hard numbers yet, but the goal is 450
h.p., and around 500 ft/lbs. Will be
mated to a 10-speed auto, and is designed
for longevity- forged crank, 4-bolt plus
cross bolted mains, cast stainless
exhaust manifolds...

It's about time that somebody started
offering a large gasser capable of heavy
towing. With the cost of buying,
maintaining, fueling and repairing a modern
diesel light truck, it just makes sense. I
am a diesel power guy, but the greenies
have all but killed diesel power for all
but those that can write the expense off on
a business.

I'll be looking for a used one in 10 years, methinks. Skip the 6.2. I'll be sad when all the V-10's are
rusted away.

(quoted from post at 13:25:31 02/08/19) I've never seen an automatic in a 7.3 that would hold up.

You act like the 7.3 powestrake is the best and most powerful engine ever made. They were good in their time, I know I had one 15 years ago when they were good, now they are a used up has been. Get over it and move on. The discussion was on the new 7.3 that Ford is promoting, not your old beater.

Guess i am way to old school , Best truck i ever had once i got all the bugs out was my 88 ford F 350 4X4 cab and chassis . 460 gas burner with a 5 speed and 4.10 gear . I drug a 28 footer behind it running all over Ohio Indiana and the eastern half of Ill. and the loads i would stack on that trailer after a fun day at sales temper tested it . Yea i did cheat abit on some changes in the engine but no performance parts were bought , and she would haul the mail . If you know old Ford engines you can do things to the OLD IRON blocks . A lot of the parts used in them go WAY back when engines ran , one must just do some refinements to the OLD way . Then i got the bug for a diesel and i went to the dark side and bought a Dodge with a real diesel not A converted gasser and indirect injection why have 8 doing the job a 6 will do and over the years everyone has played in the V 8 diesels and all the smart ones went back to 6's to get the job done . As for a slush box transmission Nah myself i'll stick with GEAR my right arm can still move a stick or two and like the old IRON HAULERS use to say , It takes IRON to move Iron . During my time as a Mechanic /TECH what ever i rebuilt many automatic transmissions , reworked many for the guys wanting to play on the drag strips , even had two in two different pick ups that i plowed snow with and yea had to rebuild both of them and they never let you down while they were parked . then my last plow truck was a 4 speed , yep a little slower lots of pedal pushen in a long day of plowing but ya know what i nevver had to rebuild that trans mission or replace the clutch , oh wait it was and OLD school lever clutch with a borg and beck pressure plate not one of these now junk diafram finge clutches with the throw out bearing riding on them all the time. No hyd master cylinder no slave cylinder just and adjustable rod and free play . ran that 79 till it got totaled in 90 .

Mine did, 220,000 on it mostly towing, never had a problem with it, my brothers 99 on the other hand had problems something with a bad torque convert.
