Cattle waterer

Trying to get the water out of the sump under my cattle waterer. I tried one of those drill powered pumps but it wouldn't draw the water up. Any ideas? It is a 24" diameter sump 4 foot deep, so plenty of water to remove.

I thought about that but the opening to get into the sump is not that big. It would need to be a small one.

Prime the drill pump with some water, antifreeze, or maybe some dish soap to lube the rubber impeller.

BTW, what is preventing the water from slowly soaking downward and away?

Bkpigs,

I've rented a sludge pump a couple of times from a local tool rental place. I don't remember the exact cost, but it wasn't too expensive. I had one
for a couple of days and the other for three or four days. They worked very well.

A 12 volt powered bilge pump would be small and still move several hundred gallons per hour. For 120 volt powered look at small inexpensive fish pond pumps. Any large hardware store, Walmart, Fleet Farm, etc. will have both in stock. Don't forget the proper diameter hose.

Thanks. I think I will give the fish pond pump a try. The water table is very high right now. That is why it won't drain back down.

Those drill pumps work great, but they need to be primed. I used one to pump a couple hundred gallons of heating oil out of a tank... once primed it pumped great. I also keep an old electric water pump out of a camp trailer laying around for situations like yours.

Like others have said a 12 volt boat bilge pump is small and works great.

I have a few of them I have picked up on sale for about $10 each.

-Drain puddles by the shop in the spring.

-Pumped calcium into tires.

-Used one on a solar powered water trough in the pasture.

-And of course I have one in each of my boats.

Another thought would be a wet/dry shop vac.

Some of those drill pumps have a rubber impellor if it is run dry for just a short time the impellor burns up. Remove the hoses, and stick it in the water see if it pumps. Stan
