Old concrete barn floor has top layer turning to sand. What's the best way to prevent further decay ?

N matter what you put on top, it will continue to fail underneath. Replace it.

Either let it all turn to sand and start over or chemically strip it off and start over. There was a point where maintenance could have helped but it's too late for that now.

Could you chip a layer off and then put on a layer of self leveling concrete?

Won't paint slow it down? Has anyone ever just poured a new floor over the old?. It's a 50 year old creosote pole barn. I'm thinking of replacing them with ductile iron pipe 20' feet long. I might just build another one with the pipe.

Ask a pro who deals with concrete. Long ago they resurfaced a parking garage in Allentown,pa. They used a 6000 psi pressure washer. Blasted right down to the good cement. Then they resurfaced. Now if your cement is of poor quality it is just going to keep falling apart no matter what.

I have replaced the top surface of many bridge decks. you have to remove all the old deteriorated concrete down to sound concrete, sand blast and then place a layer of high density concrete a minimum of 1 1/2 inches thick--a bonding compound has to be applied between the old and new concrete
