Dead battery fully recovered

Patient needed warmed up and charged at 8 amps. Going to leave it on charger to desulfate.

The new battery spent the night in cold pole barn.

If the new battery was warmer it would have a higher ca.

The only test to do is a load test. One of those HF load testers do a good job. Around $20.oo and a very handy tool. Just had a battery that finally came up but when you threw a load on it she would crash down to a little over 9 volts. It was not a cheap battery. Weak cell. Cry. I finally ordered 5he special charger for glass mat type batteries. They Do need a different type unit. Will report when I get it.

I gave away my 100 amp HF tester. Many auto dealers have gone digital. My meter is what battery manufacturers use.

I've had this charger for years. Can charge GEL. WET AND AGM

I have the larger HF carbon tester. I prefer the digital. Use what you like.

I was at HF a couple of weeks ago with coupon intending to buy the large HF carbon pile load tester.

Could have bought it for $40.00 with coupon but passed when I learned that it was "12V Only."

I do not trust digital testers due to the numerous false "Good" indications.

You MUST put a load on a starting battery to determine if one is really good.

They lie you know it no need to educate ya on it... BTW it can not measure amps its a calculated guess at best...

What do you do when it guesses good but its going down for the count...

So what special charging does the AGM battery require? Will the standard vehicle alternator provide said charging, or are they a waste to install in a vehicle?

Retired for 15 years. Don't want to work for public. Like working for friends for free. I've enjoyed saving a 1914 barn from falling down. Now we are repairing plaster walls in 1909 house. I'm impressed with the quality of construction on the old house.

No idea what's special about AGM mode.
You are right. My GMC came with AGM.
Alternator works fine in wet cell.

Here are a couple of things to keep in mind when maintaining your Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery, including an OPTIMA® battery.

Many newer battery chargers, like the OPTIMA Chargers Digital 1200 12V Performance Battery Charger and Maintainer, have microprocessors that collect information from the battery and adjust the current and voltage accordingly. Some have different settings for charging flooded, gel and AGM batteries.

All lead-acid batteries can experience sulfation—the formation of lead sulfate crystals upon discharge. Look for a charger with a desulfation mode to help condition your battery and keep it performing at its best.

Low and slow is best. A low amp charger (one to 12 amps) is generally the best choice for charging any lead-acid battery. It's quicker to charge at higher amperage, but it also can generate a lot of heat, which reduces the life of a battery, just like the heat of summer.

Alternators are NOT chargers. Don't rely on your alternator to do the work of a charger. If your battery is discharged to the point where it cannot start your vehicle, use a charger as soon as possible to make sure your battery gets fully charged.

An alternator is meant to maintain a battery, not charge it.

Batteries eventually die. Batteries are a consumable product. No battery will last forever. The goal is to consistently maintain your battery to get the most life out of it.

[b:86ea9d70e6]Different chargers. Different capabilities. Under normal conditions most 12-volt automatic battery chargers will work on an AGM battery.[/b:86ea9d70e6] Many newer battery chargers have settings specifically for AGM batteries; some even have separate settings for OPTIMA REDTOP and YELLOWTOP batteries, like the OPTIMA Chargers Digital 1200 12V Performance Battery Charger and Maintainer.

AGM and gel technology differ. Remember that the technology of an AGM battery is not the same as a gel battery, which has its own charging requirements. If your charger offers different modes, select the correct one for your battery. If you use the gel setting to charge an AGM battery, it won't fully charge and, over time, it could actually damage your AGM battery.

Under normal starting conditions, an OPTIMA battery should never experience at rest voltages below 12. Most 12-volt chargers and alternators have no problem recharging an OPTIMA if it has an at rest voltage of 10.5 or greater.

The magic threshold – 10.5 volts. The charging scenario for a deeply discharged AGM battery, one that's dipped below 10.5 volts, may be slightly different. The OPTIMA Digital 1200 can recover batteries that have been discharged as low as 1.25 volts. For other charger tips for recovering a deeply discharged AGM battery can be found in OPTIMA's tech tip, How to Resuscitate a Deeply Discharged AGM Battery.

Sounds to me as if my old chargers are fine, but they'd love for me to buy a new one from them that is SOOOO MUCH better. I will look at options if and when I need to replace the charger I have.

I've had mine for years. Never lied to me
yet. It even says when there is a bad
Cell on a sealed battery.

Perhaps other brands lie, mine hasn't.

Use what you trust. I have carbon and
digital. I trust my digital. It's my go
to battery tester.

Carbon testers don't have digital amp readings, do they?

what does the hydrometer read should be 1260 or better on all the cells you can have batt voltage reading good but that doesent mean all cells are good

There must be a bug in the digital process. On two occasions I've had batteries indicate good, but would fail to start the car after setting overnight. In both cases, a new battery fixed the issue.

I think most stores and shops have moved to them because they're mostly right, fast and require no training to operate. They occasional false report is better than counter employees not doing them right.

Local stores will test batteries in the car, free. A load test takes much longer and requires more training/skill. See above about counter employees!

No, but it will measure at least an order of magnitude more current than can any "digital" battery tester that I have seen or heard of.

All one needs do is look at the size of the leads that connect to the battery.

Surely you cannot be claiming that your instrument is measuring 1045 amps???

I've heard similar arguments from many folks, but never from an EE.

Bingo, Ken.

Digital battery testers are quite effective in determining if a battery is "bad" but I've never seen one that is reliable in determining if a battery is "good."

Dean

Why would anyone need, or even want, a digital "amp reading," which is nothing more than a display of some algorithm derived estimate?

Dean

Yes they do. I ordered the correct charger on Ebay a couple of days ago. You
also need a new type of tester. Will do every type of batteryyou have including
these new ones. . A dumb charger and even the smart type do not see the battery
correctly. The ACA batteries have no internal ressistance and are a pure pile
of potential power. I will down load one of the utube how to sites. Not
complicated just a little differance technology. Kinda like going from a cap
gun to a phasers Captain Kirk. This guy js a little long winded but he wants to
show you all of the ways and reasons. There are several more if 6ou want to
watch them. Even he says heck yes get the new charger!! Also... Optima now has
an even better battery called flow through type. Bull Elephant amount of ower.

"I've had this charger for years. Can charge GEL. WET AND AGM"

Why does it say on the charger FOR LEAD ACID BATTERIES ONLY.

Best answer is lead acid batteries can be Gel which are used in electric wheelchairs .

Cars can use wet or AGM lead acid .

So this works on all 3.

Read it and make up your own mind... I will not hold it again ya... I prefer the gold standard and not trade some accuracy for speed.

Exide's McLaughlin agrees, adding, "We (also) recommend the methods as outlined in the BCI Service Manual. The first is the carbon pile test. At 15 seconds if the battery is (less than) 9.7 volts, it should either be replaced or recharged and re-tested. Batteries greater than 9.7 volts can be returned to service. The second is a conductance test with one of the various meters available on the market. We recommend following the meter’s guidance on whether the battery is Good, Bad/Replace or Recharge and Retest. We do not advise making decisions solely on the estimated CCA rating output."
